Lagos ( means lakes) is a city in Algarve, in southern Portugal.
In my opinion, Lagos is one of the most amazing cities in the Algarve and Portugal, due to its variety of beautiful beaches, rock formations (Ponta da Piedade), and lovely architecture.

Lagos is also an historic centre of the Portuguese Age of Discovery, frequent home of Henry the Navigator ( a central figure in the early days of the Portuguese Empire and in the 15th-century European maritime discoveries and maritime expansion, he is regarded as the main initiator of what would be known as the Age of Discovery),historical shipyard and, at one time, centre of the European slave trade.
Speaking of slave trade, here is the Slave market that was turned into an Art Gallery.
Built in 1444, it was colonial Europe's first slave market. The building we see was substantially re-built in 1691. Unfortunately I wasn't able to take pictures inside because it was closed.
Church of Santa Maria
Built in the 15th century, the church has a rectangular layout, single nave, and elevated main chapel, baptistery and high choir. Laterally, with direct communication to the nave, there is an intricately carved masonry doorway dating from the early 16th century. The high altar is painted in a surprising manner - with luminous colours and biblical scenes.
The local people considered it to be the Parish Church in substitution of the Church of Santa Maria da Graça, that was destroyed in the 1755 earthquake after a fire. The church was rebuilt at the end of the 19th century.
Lagos was also the home port for Gil Eanes who was the first to sail beyond Cape Bojador in 1434.
This statue is next to the walls of the old city of Lagos. They are really beautiful. You can see for yourself on the following pictures:
If you are visiting Portugal don't miss out Lagos!
