Hi there my Steemian friends and followers!
I am excited to introduce you to another remarkable piece of architecture that I have encountered during my travels. This magnificent building is called the Rafael Uribe Uribe Palace of Culture and you can find it in the center of Medellin in northwestern Colombia.
You might think I made a typo with those two "Uribes" in the title but actually, I didn´t. The building is named after Rafael Victor Zenon Uribe Uribe (usually known just as Rafael Uribe Uribe), a prominent Colombian lawyer, journalist and military leader who lived between the years 1859 and 1914.
Designed by the renowned Belgian architect Augustin Goovaerts in the Gothic Revival architectural style, the palace is home to various cultural programs and events related to the Antioquia Department (one of 32 departments in Colombia) such as art exhibitions, festivals, concerts, films, conferences etc.
The construction of this majestic building started in 1925 and it took several construction stages, a few decades of hard work and many engineers and architects before this architectural jewel was completed in 1982 when it was also proclaimed one of the National Monuments of Colombia.
These days, the Rafael Uribe Uribe Palace of Culture is open to public. It houses archives, libraries, art galleries, auditoriums and other facilities where visitors can learn something about the history and culture of this part of Colombia.
All photos of the Rafael Uribe Uribe Palace of Culture featured above were taken by me earlier this year. As you can see, we didn´t have a good weather that day as they sky was overcast and the light conditions were very poor but hopefully, you can still have an idea how grandiose this building is.
Around the palace, you can also find some of the iconic Fat Statues by Fernando Botero, one of the most recognized artists of Colombia as well as all Latin America. I wrote about the statues in this post some time ago, so feel free to check it out too. Botero is the living legend of Colombian art and his extraordinary works can be found and admired in many countries all over the world.
