What I love about art even though I can't draw a circle to save my life is it often open to interpretation even if it is a simple flower or vase.
The colors used, the strokes, the elements in the background and the portrayal of light and darkness.
In this case the images could be a whole variety of interpretatin based on the mood of the person.
To me it could be so many personalities and traits that make up a person and the persona he projects of him on the boat as if a stage to the world.
But don't take my word for it hahaha

I like your idea of it representing all of the many personalities and traits in the world. I'm always amazed that everyone can be so different, even though we are basically all the same! It's amazing really. And the "boat as a stage" is a pretty cool interpretation Mav! It's true, how many times a day are we just a little bit different depending on who it is we are actually talking to.
