will be, in my week based on a little thought and reflection.Wednesday marks the mid-point of the working week and the run into the weekend and it seems the perfect time to stop and think. #whatsupwednesday is a snapshot of what's been going on, or

I took this image at St Michael's Mount, Cornwall UK.
Interview madness
I've been interviewing candidates for a role at my office over the last week and I'll be honest, the quality has been poor; It's been slim-pickings as far as selecting people to interview goes and some haven't even turned up for their appointment; Many of those who did so didn't fill me with much confidence either. One woman turned up looking more like she was applying for a role as a stripper in fact, another didn't bother to tuck the back of his short in - First impressions and all. Like I said, slim pickings.
Maybe people don't want to work and are only applying to meet government requirements to maintain their unemployment benefits? It's been challenging to find someone worthy of receiving a second interview, let alone an offer. The search goes on and, nope, stripper-girl and non-shirt-tucker didn't get a second interview.
Got an ouchy
Have you ever stubbed your toe at 0300h when making an early-morning pit-stop? It happened to me Sunday night and I think I might have broken my big toe! Yeah yeah I'm a big baby, I know. It bloody hurt though!
Waking up in the early hours of the morning is never enjoyable and I suppose I should put a light on so I can actually see but I was in try and stay as much asleep as possible mode so that I might have half a chance of actually getting back to sleep. The net result was a stubbed toe when I hit it on the bed post and no sleep anyway - My grand plan didn't work out and I've been limping a little this week because of it; Not when people are looking of course - That's when I tough it out. Maybe I'll learn my lesson and use the light switch next time - Probably not though.
Hospital visit
On the weekend a friend had a pretty tragic incident occur when his wife accidently pulled over a feeding-bottle warmer onto their son of six weeks old. The hot water burned him down the length of one leg.
Naturally the mother is feeling pretty bad about it and considering the baby is in hospital I thought I'd show some solidarity and make a visit, more for the parents not the bub. I took a little gift basket for the mum and checked in on the little tacker and all seems ok - The doctors don't seem to think there'll be much, if any, scarring. A reminder that accidents happen and one must be prepared and diligent - Sorry, I'll not lecture you about preparedness although...Be prepared for things folks, bad things happen sometimes.
Viking sayings
I've been getting into phrases lifted from various Viking Sagas for a while and in the last couple weeks even more so. I really like how these old words of wisdom can have such an impactful meaning and relevance to a person in the modern era. I'll show you:
Fight your foes in the field, not be burnt in your house - Völsunga saga
This phrase speaks of having ownership and taking responsibility to face challenges as they come rather than shy away and allow them to wreak potential havoc through inactivity and failure to act. It hints at a personal ethos of mine, essentially, stand and act to move oneself forward rather than fall and stay down or in place.
Anyway, I think it's really cool that these phrases from over 1000 years ago can offer up some value today, for me at least. I'm enjoying reading and pondering them and some are pretty funny too, not so relevant...Unless one is out there swinging an axe in battle.
That's it for today's #whatsupwednesday, I hope the rest of your week goes well and here's a Viking saying for you to take away with you.
Great deeds and ill deeds often fall within each other’s shadow - Gísla saga
There is a very fine line between good and evil so tread carefully.
Skol! 😉

I mean, are you saying you don't need an office stripper? Think of all that sweet, sticky morale.
Lol...I didn't think of the morale boost it could provide...I'm not a very good manager it seems. 😁
There is a very fine line between good and evil so tread carefully. I liked that line it has a deep meaning 💕
Yeah, it's pretty good right? I've walked the line and on both sides of it also, I think if a person is honest the same could be said by all of us.
Been there done that. Some people are over confident and some don’t even care. What position are you interviewing for? Good luck finding the right candidate.
It's an admin-support role in the commercial property sector, four days a week 10-4. Reasonable remuneration and incentives. It's a pretty decent role actually, no client contact. It must be easier being unemployed and getting government benefits though. (Paid for with my tax dollars.)
Luck is needed. 😁
Viking quotes are awesome. Those are the first I have heard but I like em.
No luck on the toe mate! Hope it gets better quick.
I'll be doing a weekly post on Viking quotes starting tomorrow, should be cool. Or could be totally shite. Either way it's happening. 🤣
Fucking toe. Although it was the bed post and my stupidity that did the damage. 😬
I see a gap, I want to read it!! Even if it ends up shite I want to read it but really, how can anything Viking end up shit?
I have broke many a toe, always makes me limp like a bastard. Such a pain in the arse. It sounds daft but its not till you do a toe in that you realise how much you need your feet! :oD
This is how I feel and so it's happening. I'd give you a sneak peek but don't want to ruin the awesomeness of it. Besides, if people say it's shite maybe we'll form the square and do battle to the death Viking style. Or just pour some mead and sit around the fire in the long hall yelling SKOL all fucking night. 🙂
You're right you know, I'm limping a little wishing I had a non-malfunctioning toe; Popping some pain killers here and there [but that's not my style really.] I'll live, had worse. I actually have an operation next week so I'm sure my toe will become just a minor inconvenience in comparison.
To avoid stubbed toe syndrome at three in the morning, (and as you age you will learn), keep a palm sized flashlight under the pillow. Not all people as they age need to make early morning pit stops, but having that flashlight helps to not fall down from a short trip.
Having a hard time finding a worker maybe go on the offensive and try sniping one from somewhere else. If it is a sales person you are looking for and you know of a hard worker at a nowhere job hand them an application. At least you know that person is wanting to work if they are at a nowhere job.
You could always take a risk and do a job notification thing at one of the local high schools or collages. Or maybe hire a sign waver, (do they have them in Australia), to stand on a corner waving a sign Job Info Here. I saw a headline go by during my early morning disgusted look at Google News Headlines, about lots of jobs but no workers, so I guess you are not the only one having a hard time finding a worker.
This is a good idea. I'll get the to dress up as a chicken and wave a big sign around on the main road, it's sure to work! I'll probably get better applicants too...Or I could just hire the chicken guy to do the job! I know where to get one too...Dominos!
You mention about the jobs no workers thing and that's exactly the case I alluded to in this post. The government, here at least, pay people too much to sit on their ass and do nothing. We're not the only ones looking for workers. You know, not that long ago the fruit producers couldn't get workers to go fruit-picking. Like, no one wanted to do it. So, bring in workers from the Philippines. Problem solved. But is it? #pathetic
I don't like poaching people from other places and in truth the role isn't one that probably even affords me the chance as it's an admin support role essentially. I was hoping for an older woman actually; You know, kids in their twenties, a mortgage and all...Dependable but doesn't want to work full time hours. The search continues, as does the disappointment.
You know I'm a prepared guy right? I have a high intensity LED Lenser torch on the bedside table...I didn't use it though as I was trying to stay asleep during the entire episode. It didn't work out so well. Lol.
Just on our short runaround today I saw a help wanted sign at one of the local pizza places, last week it was the tire change out place, I wonder who will be looking next week. Newspapers, the few that are still around are probably loving the extra add revenue from business looking for employees.
I'm retired, I could go back to work, but why? All those non-retired workers that were forced to go and sit at home because of a bad flu season, have no real reason to go back to work, they survived sitting at home doing nothing and pretending to be retired. The government took good care of them, until the government kicks them to the curb they will still be sitting around doing nothing.
You get used to the get up and go night time trips, the first few months of it it may be difficult to fall back to sleep right away, but as time passes and it becomes a normal thing you end up back in la-la-land pretty quick, at least I do now.
I have trouble sleeping to be honest, like a lot of trouble, as there's too many things in my head so waking up from a good sleep is so annoying - Add in a stubbed toe...Not well pleased. I'll live though, I've had worse.
I agree with you on the job thing...So many will have a rude awakening at some stage, I htink anyway.

I'll be honest, I've done this in the past. I was still recovering from being burned out, but did need the government help for the few months I was eligible. I just made sure to write bad letters though, so I didn't waste too much of everyone's time.
There's been a few times where I did try to go for a job, but the vibe just wasn't there during the interview. That's where I let it shimmer through that it might have been a mistake. I don't like those kinds of time wasting moments.
Job and applicant hunting can suck from both sides of the table I guess! Hope you'll find a good candidate eventually.
Amateur! I can stub multiple of my toes at broad daylight, while sitting on the floor (last week).
The time-wasting element annoys me as I need to be pretty scheduled in my day - When they don't turn up I find something else to move on with but their appointment may have meant I've said no to someone else, or squeezed a client into a slot that is ultimately inconvenient. It's not cool.
You are right here. I feel for the applicants as it's never easy which is why I'm pretty kind when interviewing; I want to get the best out of the applicant, not make them feel so uncomfortable they spazz out. I appreciate it in return if I happen to be the applicant, which I have been on occasions.
Thanks for commenting, it's greatly appreciated.
Same. I've had bad, stuffy applications where in the end, I didn't even want to work there. The best ones were the ones where everyone felt like equals and there was just a nice and relaxed conversation. It's not just the applicants that need to woo the company, the company needs to be a right fit for the applicant aswell. Although for applicants the stakes tend to be higher, which give an added level of stress, so it's good that you try to make them feel comfortable.
Yep, you're right and it's exactly what I work to achieve when interviewing candidates. No point people being spazzy as it probably means they will mess up the interview. Seems you've had some experience.
On both sides of the table even! Although the other side was mostly to help make a good decision as the specialist. That side was easier to be honest, but there were only two candidates: One who was using as many big words as he could possibly think of without actually answering any questions, and the other being relaxed, talking about her previous experiences and how she would deal with things (fair but firm). It was an easy choice for all of us :-)
Lol, the big worderiser. 🤣
That's almost as funny as the jargonariser or the acronymeriser.
Nutbags.
I tend to like it when they answer the questions, showcase themselves and, more importantly, what that means for the company. It shows they're thinking ahead and trying to get into my head a little, help me help them.
Yahhhh the toe.....we all have been there 😂
Damned toe. Good thing I've got another one.
