What makes A Farewell to Arms one of the best anti-war novels is Hemingway's perspective. Hemingway was actually involved in the First World War, and what he saw at the front made him an ardent opponent of the war. In earlier war novels, some ugly aspects of war were eroded because it was too terrible for people to tolerate. However, Hemingway revealed all the ugliness of war before the eyes of the reader.
While describing all the ugliness of war, Hemingway never allowed any heroic tale to overshadow the bad sides of war, for it is about broken arms and legs, shattered bodies, lost hopes. That was the truth. According to him, there was no winner in the war. As soon as people were drafted into the army, they actually lost the war.
A Farewell to Arms, first published in 1929, is the novel that made Hemingway famous. However, this novel was only published in Italy in 1948. A Farewell to Arms was so embraced that it managed to be at the center of anti-war thought at that time. In this novel, Hemingway successfully conveyed the great difference between war and life to the reader by constructing a love story that flourishes in a harsh war environment.
