Happy New year everyone! If you're still all hyped up over the start of 2025, I hope you will continue to stay so after you finish reading my post😀 Otherwise I apologise in advance for spoiling your new year.
The Good
The people, the community, HiveFest... Too many good things I can talk about. But I'm going to be selfish and start about myself because it's the new year. My rep on Hive has been hovering at 79.9x for a long time. It doesn't help that I haven't been posting much this year, I mean last year, 98 posts only, that's less than 2 a week. Tbh the rep on Hive doesn't really mean much. If you're a newbie reading this, don't get too hung up with your rep.
On 2024 new years eve I finally tipped over to 80 🎉🎉🎉. Then I noticed my stake was 55 HP short of a nice round number, so I decided to do a little power up even though HPUD hadn't started yet.
Pretty chuffed that I managed to close off 2024 with 80 rep (63 accounts on Hive made this) and 130k HP (ranked 152 on Hive) 🎊🎊🎊
The Bad
I remember back in October I was on holiday in Athens, walking around the city and browsing on Hive at the same time. I noticed something quite odd in my feed. It's not unusual to see abuse content on Hive, but this was unusual. There were a lot of 2 or 3 year old accounts starting to write their first post. I recognise many of these posts were plagiarised. Something smelled bad. It turned out that there were over 18 thousand of these accounts, all created many years ago, and someone had started to use them to scam rewards.
Luckily these spam accounts are easy to recognise, like the one below. Through community effort, most were quickly downvoted or muted but it is still happening. Hive belongs to everyone and we all have a responsibility to make this a cleaner and better place. If you see any spam accounts, please don't upvote them.
The Sad
Two things happened on Hive this year that made me sad. I guess you can call the first one self-inflicted. After 7 years with Pinmapple, I decided to leave the project in summer. It was a difficult decision to make and made me very sad to do it, but I knew it was the best for myself and Pinmapple. Luckily, @worldmappin has carried the baton forward and we continue to have the most awesome travel community and one of the most popular community on Hive.
The second sad thing to happen was from a few days ago. I found out that @beeber had passed away on Christmas day. It was heartbreaking news, not only for me, but for everyone who knew and had interacted with her. I first came across @beeber not long after she joined Hive in 2021, she had entered my Hive PUD Guessing Contest. She was a sweet and lovely lady, and you could feel it even across the virtual world. Despite her relatively short time on Hive, she left a mark on the chain and she will forever be our Hive Angel. ❤️
The Ugly
I'm calling this ugly because I think it really bad optics for an account and Hive. The constant draining of rewards, all take and no give to the community, treating Hive as their person ATM with no regards for others. A lot of newbies come to Hive saying they're here to work. They make multiple meh quality posts a day because there are communities that will blind vote content without checking it.
A person is free to do whatever they want with their rewards, I just question is this the best way to help Hive grow?
We talk about promoting Hive to the outside world and getting more eyes on the chain. But when you look at the feed of the latest posts, it's not exactly the most inspiring.
Yes, I'm ranting now because I don't want to sugar coat things, even on new year's day.
The future
As we start the new year, perhaps we can think about what we want for and from Hive. If you're here to extract, good luck with that. If you're here to help build and grow Hive, welcome to the club. Let's all work together in this.
Happy New Year everyone!!!
It's definitely really sad to see the number of people who send HIVE out to the Binance account on a daily basis.
I see a lot of new accounts withdrawing within a month after they've joined, and that really frustrates me
Yeah, me too!
i don't even mind those. they want to see if it is real :D
accounts that are here for months or even years and still just powering down are the ones i am not fond of.
I get it there are times there are emergencies and you need cash, but those in constant power down with no contribution to the chain is tricky as well.
That's good going. Well done. The way I look at it , I keep my HP rewards staked and try then to reward myself with the liquid Hive to buy whatever, just in case Hive goes down the swallow hole and I have nothing to show for it. I buy crypto like Splinterlands cards , Soulkeep cards or other crypto that I can trade. Ultimately the dream would be to win big on one of my trades and stake the winnings back in HP so I become a big fish. I used to be like yourself and stake as much as possible but I became disenchanted by the people (some with very low HP themselves ) taking thousands out of Hive to Binance for our "Marketing " activities. I don't mind the shit posters because we are talking a few Hive. I am more talking about where the real money is in the DHF. One person with a HP of 32 withdrew 60,000 HBD in Hive this year for example and her answer was she was a woman living in a difficult country. I could not see how Hive could sustain this so I powered down and I am glad I did. I will just tip away now with posts as a hobby but I am still a bit disillusioned and disappointed by it all. I actually now think Steem under Ned had more of a future.

I know what you mean, your deep dive into the Value plan is quite an eye opener.
We, or rather the chain was still young back then, it was a wild west and most had little idea what to do. We're not perfect now, but I'd be say we've managed to muddle thru and improved a lot. Those who's been around for a while appreciate what we have built, so I still have hope it will get better
I’ve yet to have any of my projects connect with the community here but I’m still more hopeful for hive than almost any cryptocurrency because of the utility of the technology. We talk a lot about the social side but as you point out, there are some downsides and upsides to that. The tech, though, is a great asset that hopefully will support an improving community of legit users (like the web3 games have done to an extent)
Not all projects necessarily need to be connected to Hive, like the Ghanian bore holes doesn't. I think if we can use Hive to help do some good outside in the real world, that would be fab as well.
We're on almost identical HP and I ticked over to 130k today. I do get that some people really need the money, but we need those who will build a stake. I saw in the latest stats from @arcange that we lost some orcas and dolphins in the last month.
It should be possible to deal with the scam accounts as some people run scripts to detect them and so they can have their rep knocked down quickly. They should not earn much.
All life is here on Hive, good and bad. We have to encourage the good stuff.
All the best to you for 2025.
!LUV
I saw your HP when I was checking mine. You were 35 under, I nearly powered up for you because it was such an eyesore 😂
That scam farm doesn't do that much harm, just annoying like nits gnawing away. It's the other abusers and when community owners blind vote shit making the situation worse.
Let's hope at least the Brit's community will improve this year
I assume some people are powering down as I've gone up a few more places. That's not so good, but people make their own choices for what is best. I keep wondering where this Hive thing is going. We know it has some good qualities, but it's a long wait for better times.
Testing our patience here...
LOL! I had a payout coming that was enough. I like round numbers too. I'd like to have over 150k by the end of this year. My rep will take a while to get to 80.
I'll see if I can recruit a few more people. We need the pioneers who will take a chance on something new. I'm just fed up with FB etc.

Same same on both sides of Hive. I still love it but the bad side pisses me off. I have had to power down and take some Hive out because I need the money at the moment as I'm not working and had to help son out with some money. Life happens. I've been working ass off to support Hive growth for years so won't be chastised by anyone for doing this. I would have loved to hit 100 k but in the end I'll just stick around and enjoy the good bits and keep writing quality content .. I hope haha ... And support Hive in that way.
You forgot the bad side of people getting ridiculous upvotes for doing fuck all. But we don't like to moan do we? 😂😂
Life throws curve balls at you, and it's good that Hive is there for backup. But for many, Hive is their personal money printing machine, grab as much as they can everyday, that's what pisses me off.
You been building on Hive for many years, the Hive Garden is one of my favourite community on Hive, I love how inclusive it is and that you don't need to plag or abuse to create content there.
And yeah, moaning is good every now and then, think we earned the right to do that 😄
Thanks darling, I do try my best with the HG so that means an awful lot xx Happy New year.
I didn't know @beeber but it's very sad and makes me think o should write a post for 'in event of my death' and instruct Jamie how to log on and post it should the time come.
Don't be forget to tell him about the keys. I don't think my hubs has much idea what to do with my account if I die. Luckily he's met a few people on Hive, I'll may have to nominate a trusted person for him in case he needs help. With some luck, my wallet could cover my funeral costs 😂
The 'in event of my death' post is a good idea, not that I wish to read yours or anyone's.
VibesCheck out what @coldbeetrootsoup, @cttpodcast and the guys (@lordbutterfly and @verbal-d ). Very good, outward-facing content and contests :)
I don't have that many followers, but I try to make as many videos as I can using my favorite HIVE dApps.
Have you seen my stuff?
I'll do my best to increase the amount and quality of my outward-facing content this year 🙌

With the quick buck drainers, well, as long as there's a reward pool, there will be people that will want to extract without giving anything back. Fortunatelly, there's more and more orcas that are picking up the Hive they sell and powering up to reward builders who are adding value and keeping our network secure.
First of all, I want to say I've never used lightning wallet before, that transaction was so cool. I wish crypto was accepted in more places here.
Despite my rant and frustration, thankfully I know there are a good bunch of people here who have the best intentions for Hive, all doing their own bit, be it investing, staking, development, building communities, and shilling Hive like you are doing yourself. It is this that makes me continue to believe there is a future in Hive otherwise I would have left ages ago.
ps, to answer your question, yes I have seen your stuff around, I'm just not very good at engagement, despite preaching to newbies all the time 😅
Happy New Year! Hive is like life. There will always be everything. How many unpleasant and not exactly inspiring things you deal with in your days? I remember, for example, the crash post you did. Or the one about the home repairs... and so on.
What is unsolvable is death. Poor beeber, may she rest in peace.
I don't think the abuses and worrying situations in Hive will stop as long as the blockchain is made up of humans. What reassures me is that there are always humans, real people, who do good and whose actions show the right path.
Thank you for all the journey shared, @livinguktaiwan.
Sadly abuse will always be part of the ecosystem here, just like in real life, there's always going to be opportunists. But you are spot in, there are also good people around who will balance things out.
I hope 2025 will be a great year for you @nanixxx and that all your wishes will come true!
(I wish for the postcards to arrive hahaha, it's one of those wishes) 😂
Thank you! And I wish you to continue travelling the world, health, lots of joy and being the beautiful person you are. A big hug.
It's been nearly two years for the first post card 😤
🤣
Come to Cuba and we'll go together there to the post office
On my way!
I sadly didn't know @beeber, but I have now read many posts talking about here. It seems like she made quite an impression on people and everyone who met her liked her. May she rest in peace.
Ideally Hive would support and even encourage people to just extract value. After all, when you sign up to Medium or the like, you aren't expected to only withdraw a portion of your earnings and leave the rest there—no, you are encouraged to take it all and then blog about how much you made, attracting more people who want to do the same.
Not necessarily a fair comparison, I know, but at the same time when we attract people to Hive with the message "get paid for writing your blog" that is the implication there and that is what's in their minds, fair or not. At the same time, I know Hive is nowhere near the point we need to be to support this kind of structure. We all need to do our part for supporting Hive as we grow into its full potential. I think we need to consider other ways to gamify Hive and encourage people to stay invested in the system. Hivebuzz is a good start, but honestly, it's kind of lame. I say that as someone who has participated it in for at least a few years, even doing the HPUM for the past two years. We need more to give newbies to do. I guess that wouldn't prevent the abuse from people who just come here and try to farm rewards, but it might help prevent people who come here and get bored and just withdraw and leave because they aren't seeing any reason to stay.
I think retention has always been a bit of a problem because the only hook newbies want is instant rewards. They can't see beyond that, and don't understand the value of networking.
You make a very good point about gamification to keep newbies hooked. I'm cooking something at the moment for newbies, but the gamification part is quite simple, I may look to beef it up in the next stage. Need to think about that after I launch it
Congratulations on achieving a reputation of 80 and having a 130K HP stake.
I fully agree with your point about accounts using Hive as an ATM.
I have never made a power down since I have been on Hive because I want to increase my HP but like you I don't like those who make continuous/total power downs.
In my opinion a good rule of life is to give when you get and I think those who keep at least 50% in HP of their earnings on Hive believe in the future potential of Hive, everyone else does not.
That is why I prefer to support authors who write medium-low quality posts but have a high propensity for staking than authors who write great posts but have HP always close to 0
Happy new year! :)
I'm still gobsmacked when I see high rep accounts that's been around for many years only have a few hundred HP staked 😏
As to support, I'm more selective now and curating very safe on those I know, but this year I would like to expand my reach, just need to spend more time curating...
All the best for 2025 for you!
So sad to hear of another death on Christmas day. I got call from my boss that one of my favourite clients passed away a couple days after Christmas. She would have been seriously ill over Christmas. Such a horrid time of year to lose a family member. Her youngest daughter is 16 and her kids were very close to her.
That's such terrible news and so sad for the kids. Christmas will never be a happy event for them now. I imagine you would be quite close to your client for her to be your favourite 😞
Not super close, but one of the ones I looked forward to seeing and would happily put myself out for.
I think I would like to see the end of "auto votes" for accounts that have very little HP, and the users who do very little authoring. To me that smacks of lazy passive income farming
I'm sure we all have our wish list for Hive, and I can tell you mine's pretty long!!
LOL!!
Happy New Year! The 'Good' part reminds me that consistency and genuine effort really do matter, even if the numbers sometimes feel overwhelming. The 'Bad' and 'Ugly' are eye-openers, especially for newbies like meit's a reminder to contribute meaningfully and be mindful of the community.
There's plenty more good on Hive and if you hang around for long enough you will experience more if it. As to the bad and ugly, that depends on your tolerance level and how much you take to heart. Basically Hive is as good or bad as you want it to be 😉
Anyways, happy new year @livinguktaiwan and congratulations for rep 80 even it’s not only the way to value an account. I feel how much you care Hive and the community from the post ☺️ I wish I can contribute to Hive this year.
Happy New year Akiko!
I think you're doing a great job on Hive and despite you not physically being in Japan, I know you're very active in the Japanese community. Plus I see a lot of Japanese Snaps!!
It would be lovely to see the Japanese community more active on Hive again, I remember meeting quite a few of them at SF in Bangkok
Happy new year!
First of all, I am not aware about the passing of @beeber I'm really in shock! May her soul rest in peace.
Honestly, I can't blame some of them. Why? Because most people who's onboarding users are promoting Hive as "earn money to blog"...I feel that it should be changed.
At least I do my part to support the community; power up and buying some HIVE.
That's very true. I spoken to at least two onboarders about this, but I doubt it they will change their message
Well, what is your idea on how to onboard correctly without telling "earn to blog"?
I won't make that the prime message, and as an onboarder I won't help onboardees to withdraw. Too many are doing that now.
Yay! 😍
Although the rep is quite over rated a quite irrelevant, it's still a nicer threshold to achieve and amuse myself
I agree 😍
Good for your reputation, go ahead, everything is good in Hive. Thank you for visiting me.
You're welcome
Thank you very much, your visits are very satisfying and appreciated.
Lets build!
Happy New Year!
We need more builders on Hive!
Happy New Year 🎊 the sad and the ugly though unearthing, are a necessity to the build-up of life. It's sad but I choose to focus on @beeber time with us here on hive which begs me to be more sociable and interact with more lovely people on hive. May she rest in peace🙏🏽
I hope this year is most splendid and beautiful. Let's grow hive together 💕🫂
Hive is pretty simple really, all you need to do is be genuine and be yourself. Many people don't get that, but beeber did. She didn't need to do anything, just herself, and it was perfect.
Congratulations on those 80 reputation points, well deserved.

Happy 2025! Not all good at Hive but stay positive!
80 rep is an awesome number, congrats!
We do have some bad acting in the blockchain for sure (and do have to agree with @blanchy in some of his remarks); but hopefully the good stuff will outshine the bad ones, we definetely have a lot of good actors too and the potential to make things better.
Wishing you a great 2025!
Hi there. It's good to have you around as you are such an important member of the community and of HIve in general @livinguktaiwan. I am surprised that you have 1 good and 3 bad things. Does that mean you didn´t have such a great year? I do agree with your thoughts on the bad and the ugly but I think if you look at all Hive Users it is a small minority! Most of them enjoy the Hive because of the atmosphere and the community -, not because of the payouts - it is the same community feeling we can experience every time on Hivefest and when engaging with each other. Isn´t it great how on a daily basis total strangers get in touch with each other because of a topic or an opinion or an inspiration and they support each other and connect - not because of payout but because of real interest. Check out for example how many new friendships where made during the winterchallenge! sometimes It is like pen pals writing to each other. They support each other and inspire each other to go on adventures. That is so awesome! I prefer to focus on them. <3 - the rest is just a bit of noise
Happy New Pauline.
I am still reeling about beeber, we spent alot of time in each others DMs especially when I was doing Talk Time with Tengo and she was my right hand lady.
As far as Hive and rewards and all that. It does get infuriating seeing people power down and withdraw their rewards. They earned it so they can do what they want is what I would say.
Congrats on all your achievements.
I don't know what to do with Hive. They are people from developing countries who use Hive as their job, can you blame them?
Then you have the DHF and what is given out to some Hivers even OG ones for so called marketing, rally races and music competitions, is that any different to a small user draining the chain to feed themselves?
I like Hive and I like what Hive can do for people, but I can't change anything so just get on with trying to have fun and help people where I can.
You have been with Hive before it was even conceived so I feel your pain. We are the new breed of Hivers having only known Hive and for me the worry about the future of Hive is the way the DHF is being distributed.
What is the value in all that being taken offchain? To me that is worse.
Happy new year to you! It's always pleasant to see people like you and those in the comments here that care about Hive so much. You can see in their words that there's something deeper than making some money with crypto.
What I like so much about Hive is this hope to create a new place on the internet where people can simply share themselves without worrying about fuckin algorithms and big tech corps selling their data.
If only we could send this exact thought into the mind of our friends, it would be so much easier to bring more people here and make Hive grow exponentially
Hive is a mixed bag of joy, treasures and not so nice.
Congratulations on reaching 130k Hivepower
That's impressive longterm commitment to HIve Sorry to hear about the death of @beeber
