Her last drink had been exactly a year ago as of today, and she cringed in embarrassment as the fleeting images assailed her. She doubted she would ever forget that night… she had made an absolute idiot of herself! No one had invited her to get-togethers, barbecues, or even a simple restaurant dinner after that terrible night.

This was the first time in so long… and now, a waiter had placed a glass of wine before her. The host had evidently not been informed of the ordeal.

No matter. One drink would not hurt. Laughter and chatter surrounded her and she smiled at her unwitting companions before she tentatively took the glass within a thumb and finger.

It was so light, and the bubbles were delightful! The effervescence swarmed from the lemon wedge and screamed for her to take the bliss within herself. It called to her as surely as the parrot to the nectar, beckoned for her to take her sip, that one drop upon her tongue would offer an unimaginable heaven as she stood stuck within this earthly hell.

She licked her lips. They were dry and would welcome the divine liquid. They needed the divine liquid. Just one mouthful would cure her ills and moisten her mouth, she need taste no more than was necessary to fulfil this purpose… and she closed her eyes as she lifted her glass.

Though they were tired and heavy, she re-opened them as her head swam circles. Her table was so far away and she blinked, confused as she saw several empty bottles spilt across the surface and shattered upon the floor. She struggled to peer about the room with her weighty eyes and her heart plummeted as she saw the patrons gape at her, as the waiters gestured towards her, as her host hung his head in shame, and as the police approached her…

It had happened again.

Brilliant story! Nicely set up, nicely executed! :)

@ kaelci

You got talent. I don't know if you have or not, you ought to look into publishing your work in magazines. You are good with words and voice. Easy to read. Nice!

Thank you for such a fantastic compliment! :D

I haven't had anything published, other than writing here on Steemit and on an unrelated forum. I did attempt to submit something for a contest that would have been published in a magazine, but I just could not stretch it to the 2000 words necessary and I ran out of time as I discovered the contest with 2 days left on the timer. (Unfortunately, it's hard to find those! Most of them are restricted to either US/Canadian residents or United Kingdom residents, or a particular ethnicity, or a certain age group, and I'm ineligible for most.)
