The path

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past, I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone, there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

- Frank Herbert -

We all hold fears, many of them are justified; I never trust anyone who says they are not afraid of anything - dumbasses.

Fear isn't a negative thing unless we let it be; fear can be motivating and I've seen that occur in person many times. Fear causes our minds to think and it's those thoughts that lead to an action of some kind which can be productive and constructive or, of course, destructive.

Each of us takes a path through life and we can only truly see the ones that lay behind us; the one ahead, despite our best-laid plans, isn't for certain and life has a way of throwing obstacles in the way and some of them, or the things that may occur because them, can lead us to feel fear be it of the unknown, failure, personal harm or to someone/people we value; there's many reasons we feel it. No matter what though, we have to walk that path.

Your path is your own, mine is mine, and while it is increasingly prevalent for people to take influence from others, (damned social media and the bullshit found there), it's important to understand the path we've already walked as it helps us determine better ways in the present and forward and looking on the fears we've faced, (how we dealt with them), will help in the next journey forward...so I think fear plays a massive role in our lives and shouldn't be shunned, shied away from or discounted, it should be embraced; I see it like a crossroads of sorts, a point at which a decision needs to be made and that decision will impact the present and future.

The path we take through life never runs straight or smoothly and no matter how confident we are about our plan it'll change, I've lived enough life to have learned that the hard way, but we can always influence it even if that influence is simply upon how we think, our attitudes and how we act and react to what comes our way. I can only speak for myself when I say fear has played a massive role in my life and has brought about some amazingly good results; I stand up to it, put it in a fucken headlock and make it do what I want it to rather than let it stop me in my tracks...how about you?

Fear can be debilitating when you let it take over but I agree man, those who say the fear nothing are just bullshitters. You have to fear things but also get it in that headlock and take it down!

Yep, exactly; it should be motivating, confronting and make peopl feel uncomfortable...that's when they think differently, out of the box and start to seek solutions and ways forward. Works for me.

Totally, you have to face it and think around it

Indeed...and then lean into it.

One "Fucken Headlock" comin up...

Headlock the fuck out of it!

"Be afraid of the ram, be afraid of the shit, and when will I live?"
Meša Selimović

A quote from a great writer, an academic, that I often mention when we talk about fears.
Fear can be a trigger for finding various possibilities, the adrenaline it creates for us can speed us up even more, but fear is often a stumbling block and we need to get rid of it in order to do what we love in life.

Are you afraid of airplanes and flying? Fuck it, you'll never visit world-famous destinations. Are you afraid of bugs? You will never be relaxed in nature. Are you afraid that a flower pot will fall on your head from someone's balcony? You will never leave your home. Are you afraid of failure? You will never try...

Fear motivates and demotes I guess, depending on the person; I guess that's what my posts sort of suggests; that fear doesn't have to be a negative thing all the time.

Don't get me wrong 🙂 here I am not referring to real fears, someone who lives in nature, someone who is a soldier, someone who pilots an airplane or steers a ship, someone who is a responsible contractor... these people face fears that force them to be stronger, faster, better, more careful, to check every next step. I was thinking here of unfounded and banal fears, which are born in the minds of certain people every day... (fear of a bug is the most obvious example, if it is not some bug in the jungle, whose bite can kill a person 😀).

Is there a difference between fear and phobia? I have a fear of bloody spiders, but have a phobia surrounding anything to do with medical instruments or hospitals. Different emotions

I think there's a difference as fears can help a person react a particular way, based on something tangible like a tornado for instance but phobias are seated more in the irrational thought process. I don't like spiders either!

and you have some nasty buggers where you are!

Loads of them! 🥴

good luck with that!

They don't tend to bother people too much...usually. They love tourists though! 🤣

That is the bucket list changed then!!

My mind tends to wander quite a bit at all times, so it is easy for me to go down paths of fear and regret. The good thing is, because my mind doesn't stay on any one topic for too long, I usually move on pretty quickly. That doesn't mean the same things don't continuously come back to haunt me over and over again! My biggest fear is probably losing the people I love, but I know my time now with them is precious, so I just try to focus on that.

Yep, it's important to understand that time is limited and when it passes it won't come back; I think that acceptance can help a person live a little better, including the time spent with valued people, in the present.

There are many people who are blocked by fear... I was one of them in the past, until I decided to take control of my life and face those fears, learn from them and let that wisdom serve me to live better. But at one time it blocked me. Today I face it differently. We all have fears and we have to use them as an impulse, I think that's what it's all about.

Don't fear fear, fear what the fear of fear stops you from doing. Something like that anyway. 😆

I met a very wise man, he was 80 years old and he told me: don't be afraid, the only thing you have to be afraid of is fear itself. Take that he told me, I loved him like a grandfather.

I agree that fear is a necessary feeling in life, a great trigger; it's something physiological, mainly due to the adrenaline released.

The point is that fear can be a good motivator only if you have the right mindset, if you know yourself and how to overcome it. I know very capable people with the right attitude who have been frozen by fear in key moments

Yeah, it can certainly cause a person to become immobilised and ineffective in action and thought. That's not a good use of fear though. Of course, everyone is different and fear itself can be many different things each of which cause different reactions.

I am thinking about turning a new page and becoming a digital artist. Initially I would need to pay for a tablet and some software but hopefully I would not need to buy supplies after that. So in a long run I should be able to save some money. Also I would not have to worry about losing/damaging a piece by sending it to a different country. Still this would be a big jump from my comfort zone so I have not fully committed to this decision.

I reckon, based on my own experiences, that outside of your comfort zone is where something different is, maybe better and maybe not - either way, by doing things differently, trying new things, possibly better results may follow.

I agree very much with what you say, and I have little to add. I believe that fear can be a great help when it does not immobilize us, and facing our fears helps us to become stronger and to achieve our goals. But not all fears are conscious, and I would like to say something about that.

To feel fear is not so simple, to feel it, for it to happen, you have to expose yourself to the stimulus or situation that triggers that fear. And we humans have hundreds of tricks to avoid what provokes us fear. There is always an excuse not to face situations that create discomfort, and we can always find an excuse to sabotage our life without feeling bad.

We are a very skilled species at finding pretexts and justifications.

Yep, you said that pretty well and I've nothing to add. Clearly you're well-versed in human behaviour; if only everyone was a little more understanding of themselves, more self-aware, I think people would be doing a lot better through better thoughts, attitudes and actions.

Hopefully your Thursday goes well.

Thursday is going well, now I have taken a break. I hope your Thursday is going well too.

Fear is man's caution signal...

In other words it can stop one from going a certain direction and urge him in going another way...

It just depends on how man decided to interpret the signal..

How we interpret the thongs that occur in our lives often dictates how our lives end up being.

All I can say that fear is a big drawback in one's life.

Well, this whole post is about the fact that fear isn't necessarily a negative thing, so I guess I disagree with you.

Wow the line was too good. I think fear is just a delusion in humans mind. It's all about to control your mind and feelings.

An interesting perspective.

The path each one of us take through life isn't that straight and smooth. There are a of fear but we learn courage and strength through the things we pass through.

Yep, sort of what I was getting at with this post. Well spotted.

Making a decision through fear is like gambling, cause it's either good or bad am in a crossroad in my life right now where fear is affecting my activities and mindset. but the truth about it is just let things be, I dont have to force anything or do anything about it and that is what am tryna do.

So, you're sitting back and doing nothing about your situation?

Of cause am still pushing hard but its difficult to feel the fear is not there, I want the ability where I have to worry about nothing I guess that still comes by hard
