Although I enjoy the challenge of reaching some of the summits of the places I visit, I never forget that mountains are to be respected. Nature can be very beautiful, but if we don't move in it safely, the consequences can be tragic. That is why it is always best to go as far as we are allowed to go, guided by our knowledge, physical abilities, type of terrain and above all, weather conditions. When I was in Esquel I was looking forward to visiting the summit of one of the highest hills in the city but the wind did not allow us to do so, although I was satisfied with everything I was able to see in the surroundings ❤️.
When it was my turn to visit Esquel, it was March and there were not so many tourists around, which made me hesitate to go alone to some unknown mountain. This did not happen to me in the high summer season in El Bolsón, because even if I started the hike alone, there were people on almost all the trails. Even though I had read a lot about the trek to Cerro 21, also called Calfumahuida, I was not brave enough to hike it alone. It was this situation that led me to look for a mountain guide for the second time in my life, and I was lucky enough to find one who organised group outings on weekends 😃.
This mountain guide only charged me 5000 ARS for the tour ($4.5 approx), a really low price for such an activity. Perhaps because it was such a large group of people, the costs were quite low. This trekking started about 15 km from the city and up the mountain, so the guide also arranged for someone from the group to drive me up and back in his car. The appointment was at 9 AM in the main square of the city, and from there we all left in vehicles to the start of the trail. As for the weather, it wasn't forecast very favourably in terms of cloud cover and wind, but we wanted to give it a try anyway 😃.
The trail up to Cerro 21 is squeezed between mountains, so the wind was not felt so much as we hiked. Throughout the morning, the sky cleared of clouds and turned grey again in a matter of minutes, very unstable as the forecast had promised. By the time we were approaching the summit, about two hours into the walk, the shelter began to thin and the gusts began to get stronger and stronger. It was at this point that our guide asked each of us what we wanted to do, as there were people of all ages and physical conditions, and not everyone wanted to continue the walk to the summit 🙃.

Dear readers, your friend Lauramica is a wild thing and of course she decided to go all the way to the top. At that moment she felt that she could continue despite the wind and consequently the cold weather. The technical mountain clothing I have been acquiring lately is suitable for this kind of adventure, so that was no problem for me to continue. As for the guide, he continued on the way with us, while the other part of the group stayed waiting for us with a colleague of his 😅.
Continuing along the path for another 20 minutes, we reach the so-called pre-summit, a viewpoint just before the last slope to the true summit. Friends, I can't explain how strong the wind was at that point. We couldn't even take good pictures because we couldn't hold our mobile phones steady, not to mention how cold it felt to take off your gloves or how unsettled you were every time you took a step. I think all the courage that my small group had taken vanished when we all concluded that it was too dangerous to continue to the top, because if it was that windy there, it would be much, much worse at the summit 🙃.
I would not say defeated, but rather, ‘warned’ of the force of nature, we decided to return. Sometimes the ego to get to such a place can lead you to take risky decisions, but on this occasion I was happy to have a responsible group that prioritised collective safety over individual satisfaction. I was happy to have made it to that lookout point at least, and although we couldn't even get that close to the edge because of the wind, we were able to get a good view of some of the city 😃.
In all this time I learned to set up my thoughts to be happy with what I did and not to feel bad about what I couldn't do. I wanted to visit Cerro 21 and I did it: maybe I will not have reached the final summit, but I am happy with how beautiful it was the way to almost reach it. Nature and mountains are beautiful, but we should never put ourselves in danger for the sake of wanting to see a little more. There will always be another chance to go on to more mountains, and the important thing is to do it safe and sound ❤️.

Good morning dear friend @lauramica
What you say is good advice, be very respectful when climbing mountains, knowing your abilities and limitations,
I think it was a great idea to look for a guide to accompany you on this climb, it is preferable to pay a fee and feel safe and accompanied
It's great that you were brave enough to continue climbing and reach the pre-summit of Cerro 21
Thank you very much for sharing these beautiful photographs
Have a beautiful day
Yes, I think it was a very smart decision to go with a guide because the path was not very marked and the weather was a bit dangerous. Anyway, I have good memories of that day. Thanks for stopping by ❤️.
a beautiful and charming place, it looks very challenging but by seeing such a view surely tired feet will recover quickly.
It was a fairly easy trek, I have done worse treks 😅.
I totally agree nature can be a dream but I nightmare too so we always must be safe when we travel in the mountains by the way you made amazing photos also if the weather wasn't the best ❤️
