Krakow's churches no.16 – Church of St. Wojciech

There used to be a game show on TV called Millionaires. When I was young, my family and I watched a lot of TV and almost every single episode of this game show did not escape our attention. From this game show, I remember one episode in particular, when the question was asked what the name of the church standing in the Krakow Market Square was.
A St. Barbara's Church,
B St. John's Church,
C St. Mary's Church,
D St. Wojciech's Church.

The question seemed trivially simple and the answer that it was St. Mary's Church came right away, because in the 3rd grade of primary school I was on a trip to Krakow and I saw clearly that the most famous church in Poland, namely St. Mary's Church in Krakow, was standing in the Krakow Market Square. At that time, I was not suspicious that the question, which seemed quite simple, appeared very late (it was a question for a high, certainly 6-digit amount). My eyes widened when it turned out that the correct answer was not St. Mary's Church, because it is located AT the Krakow Market Square, not ON the Krakow Market Square. St. Mary's Church is located on Mariacki Square. Since that day, I have known well that the only church standing on the Krakow Market Square is St. Wojciech's Church. The legend about the construction of this church says that in the place of the temple in ancient times, St. Wojciech preached his sermons and that is why a wooden church was built in this place, which was later replaced by a brick temple from the turn of the 10th and 11th centuries. Over the centuries, the church was rebuilt and renovated many times. In the 14th century, during the Gothic period, the church was significantly expanded, and in the 17th century, Baroque elements were added, such as a dome, portal and new interior furnishings. Despite these changes, the church has retained much of its original character, which makes it a unique monument. However, after entering the interior, I must admit I was a little surprised, because the interior design was not very stunning. What really caught my eye was the polychrome decorations on the dome. The modern polychrome decorations were made by Eugeniusz Czuhorski and I will honestly say that they do not fit the interior at all, what is more, in this interior I had the impression that nothing fits together.
An interesting fact related to St. Wojciech's Church is that every Sunday the last Holy Mass in Krakow is celebrated there. In the nearby churches of St. Anna and the Dominicans there are masses at 9:30 p.m., but it is St. Wojciech who gives latecomers an extra 7 minutes to not be late and to make it to mass.

A kościół św. Barbary,
B kościół św. Jana,
C kościół Mariacki,
D kościół św. Wojciecha.

W XIV wieku, w okresie gotyku, świątynia została znacznie rozbudowana, a w XVII wieku dodano barokowe elementy, takie jak kopuła, portal i nowe wyposażenie wnętrza.

You managed to capture the beauty of this place very well, it's amazing, have a nice day ♥️

Strange church, small and square

Krakow is my favorite city in Poland. Its grand architecture reminds me of my city Lviv and I always enjoy walking there!

Anyone who attends the Krakow churches is mostly seen as a big person because their churches are always big…
