I spent several years in the 1990's living in South America. It's a beautiful continent with so many amazing places to visit. One of the countries I enjoyed visiting was Peru, there are just so many nice people there and amazing places to visit. Probably the biggest tourist spot in the nation is Machu Pichu, which I'll talk about a little later on in the post.
Ever since I was a kid I was a coin collector, so whenever I was travelling I tried to find some local silver coins. This one I believe I found on my last trip there, these are really cool coins that were produced for years. What I liked about this one was the date, made in 1893. It's still in relatively good shape considering it's age. Finding pristine coins in this age range isn't easy and they tend to be really expensive. This one is called Un Sol (One Sun), and many of the silver gold stacker community have one or two of really special coins. Have a look at this one, it really is nice shape.

About the coin:
From numista.com
I love the design they used on these, it's just a really pretty coin. From back when nations took pride in their coinage and wanted them to be works of art. Unfortunately, in the US we've lost that and and have pictures of old dead dudes on our money. This coin is made with 90% silver and weighs just about 25 grams. So if we do the math it contains 22.5 grams of silver, and at current prices it has $23.40 worth of silver. But collectors will pay much higher prices. This coins I could probably sell for around $40 or a bit more, but I have no plans to part with it any time soon!
Machu Pichu

When visiting Peru one spot that is a must see is the ancient city of Machu Pichu. Build around 1450 A.D. it sits in the notch between two large mountains at an elevation of almost 8,00 feet (2430 meters.) It truly is an amazing place and one of the last cities built by the Inca before the Spanish conquistadors put an end to their rule. Fairly little is really known about it as the Inca didn't haven't written language that was left behind. From the 1600's until the early 1900's it was essentially forgotten. Upon rediscovery, extensive archeological work started and is ongoing to this day.
Getting there can be a bit of a challenge. It's located in southern Peru in the mountains, so one can climb up the paths to the city or take the train, which is much easier and faster. They currently limit the number of visitors to 2500 a day, so you might want to check before planning a visit to see what you need to do to secure one of the slots. It's worth the trip if you ever have the chance to go to Peru!
That will do it for me today. I hope you enjoyed seeing my Un Sol coin of the day. I love old coins, it's fascinating to think about who might have held that coin in their hands over all of those years. And when I'm no longer here on this earth, this coin will still be around! Living history in your hands! Please feel free to leave any comments or questions below, and thank you for all of your support. It is deeply appreciated! Have a great day!

Nice coin and nice story @thebighigg ! !BBH
I will add for those interested and wanting to know - I have been living here in Peru for the last 30 years and I find it safe and enjoyable. Lima is a city with 10 million people so you are going to want to stay away from the high crime areas just like you would in any major metropolis in the rest of the world. But like @thebighigg mentioned - the folks here are really very nice pretty much where ever you wander.
The food is always stellar no matter where you are eating! Lima is full of world-class restaurants and the cevicherias are second to none. You just got to taste that.
If you travel to the provinces you'll be equally amazed with the freshness, variety and overall great tasting food you can find. And if you get up into the Andes we've only got like 4,000 different varieties of papas to sample.
And then for those so inclined there are wonderful libations made from pisco like the emblematic pisco sour or a chilcano (pisco, ginger ale, limon) that are refreshingly tasty if you are into that.
There are times when it is not so easy to travel in the mountains and jungle like during rainy season (November through about April) but it is always beach season up on the northwest coast (Mancora, Punta Sal) and there's a whole heap of other archaeology to check out in addition to Macchu Picchu.
Also there's great trips to be had if you are looking for Ayahuasca retreats or just wandering around the Amazon jungle on the boat tours out of Iquitos and Pucallpa.
Worthwhile places to visit and memories to make!
It's a great place, I always enjoyed visiting when I lived in South America. Great food, nice people and it was always a real safe place if you used your head and avoided bad neighborhoods. But the same can be said of New York City or Los Angeles!
The Amazon is a cool place to visit, but not too stay. Way too many mosquitos and biting bugs! lol

Cool looking coin, it's great you had interest in coins young and picked up some on your travels. I have a few currencies on my time abroad.
I have a few coins still from Afghanistan and Iraq that I picked up while on luxury vacations paid for by the government. The food was pretty good in the Green Zone, but if you went out to a FOB you got to enjoy some nice MRE's!
Haha luxury sand tent resorts, oh the days! I have some from Saudi Arabia and German marks some where.
1893 is such a long time and it makes it feel like the coin is made up cryptonite for surviving that long. Although it looks quite aged, but the contours and designs still looks decent
It's in pretty good shape for it's age, I do have some much older stuff I've picked up over the years. I checked prices this morning and turns out it's gone up in value quite a bit the last few years. Many are selling for more than $100!
The one that I have was produced much later by the United States Mint of San Francisco:Very pretty coin, @thebighigg!

That is beautiful! Back in the time mine was made they used either the Lima Mint or Santiago Mint, and no mint marks were used. I love the ones made in San Francisco and I have a couple of those as well. I love old coins, especially American, but every year they get more expensive!

@logen9f, I sent you anI think you are correct, we have lost a lot of the beautiful art on our coinage in the US.........
This city in Peru that sits at almost 8000 feet, is the same elevation that our living room was in Colorado!😇
Peru looks stunning I would love to visit someday!!!😀
It's a pretty country, lots of friendly people too! What's amazing about it is that it was built by stones not from the top of the mountain. But rock carried up there to build it, that was a pretty difficult accomplishment back then!
Well that's very impressive they are very hearty people!!!😀
Definitely silver country as well!!!👍😀
Nice coin man. Damn if you've been collecting since the 90s you must have a sweet collection!

That is a pretty cool coin. Is South America safe to travel to? Are some countries safer than others? I have seen some stuff about Colombia lately, that makes me wonder if it would be better not to go there. Not that I am planning on going anytime soon anyway! I just wondered.
Overall it's safe. Some countries have periodic government instability, like Peru had a couple years ago. Colombia is safe overall if you don't go to the wrong places. Chile is probably the most stable country of them all, people are really nice too! Mexico I think I would avoid for the time being though, as well as Venezuela.
Yeah, that's pretty much a given with Mexico and Venezuela. Which is too bad because the folks on here from there seem like delightful people!
I was in Caracas, Venezuela in 1995, what a gorgeous place. Too bad the Chavez took over, and now his follower Maduro I think is his name runs sham election that he always wins. When you control the election it's a given you will win. Just like Putin in Russia...
For sure!
You remind me that I haven't written about my older coins in a long time.

Very cool. I wish I would have grabbed some old coins when I was down there. I did buy some jewelry at a factory near Cusco.
Most places it can be hard to find coin shops, several I bought off of people I had met. That's pretty cool that you found some jewelry from the factory, nice!
Yes, it was a cool trip. Guided 12 day Archeological tour of Peru and Bolivia. The factory tour was awesome.
