Every time I go grocery shopping, I always forget to bring a grocery bag and end up buying a plastic one for 65 pence. This has been a constant issue, likely because I’m not organized enough, always rushing without thinking. Or maybe those supermarket plastic bags just don’t appeal to me.
To solve this problem, I decided to make my own grocery bag using macramé. Since it’s my first bag and I haven’t practiced macramé for a while, it took me a bit of time to get back into the flow of knotting. I started last night and worked on it intermittently today between other tasks. I’m pleased to say I’ve finished it!
As usual, I didn’t follow any specific pattern and simply knotted the cords into a bag.
I used leftover cords in pewter blue and grey, along with the following materials:
Materials:
32 strands of macramé cord (3m each)
A metal pole from my hover
Scissors
Tape
Instructions:
Secure your pole in place.
Gather your 32 strands of macramé cord.
Fold each strand in half to create a loop (optional if you want to attach them to the pole using lark’s head knots, though you can simply tie them on if preferred).
Attach all strands to the pole. Group the strands into sets of four, creating eight groups. And secure them with tape.
Begin working square knots with each group.
Rotate your work and repeat the same process on the other side.
Continue tying knots to form the bottom of the bag, adjusting the width based on how tightly you tie the knots.
Once the base is a suitable size, transition to the sides by continuing to tie square knots.
Continue until you get the desired height of the bag.
To finish, I added a final row of square knots to make the design look more symmetrical.
Make the Handles
Gather four sets of strands (two on each side).
Braid each set of four strands.
Tie them together.
Trim the ends in a staggered pattern to thin them out gradually, then secure them with knots.
Make a gathering knots using 4 meters of cord.
I checked my work and was happy with how it turned out. It didn’t need any embellishments—it looks great as it is!
The handles are sturdy, and the bag can hold plenty of items. I’m sure this will last me a long time, and I won’t be forgetting my grocery bag anymore.
I can’t wait to take it to the supermarket, fill it up with groceries and show it off!
