The disaster film usually uses the doomsday spectacle as a selling point. Unlike the grand scene of Hollywood's catastrophe, the "Tunnel" is very simple, with few main scenes and characters. However, the film is like a sharp dagger, stabbing the heart of the real world. Around the 35-day national major event of saving the man, the film presents a ridiculous, cruel and true cross-section of contemporary society, powerfully mocking officials, the bloody media and the ignorant ordinary people.
In the beginning of the movie, the man who drove into the tunnel unfortunately suffered a collapse. Fortunately, he used the mobile phone to get in touch with the outside world in time. The subsequent rescue scene was unprecedented, and it was an illusion that the collapsed tunnel seemed to set up a large stage dedicated to politicians and journalists. The politicians showed up on TV and said that they must do their best to save people. The media's drones, just like locusts, can't wait to fly into the tunnel. But these seemingly concerned to watch the scene, in fact, among the people with various purposes, how much is really concerned about the safety of the man? The fact is that politicians only care about their image and political achievements. Journalists only want to grab more news and earn more wages.
A group of reporters are the focus of the film. At the beginning, some reporters arbitrarily called the trapped male protagonist, trying to induce him to say that the rescue work was not effective, which made this emotions once unstable. Oh Dal-su, the captain of the rescue team who couldn’t tolerate, yelled at the scene and threatened to scare the media personnel with the reporter’s law. In the first mistake, the journalists expressed disappointment when the rescue did not go well. After learning that they had made a mistake, their eyes were bright. Using the pain and disaster of others to capture the eye, those reporters’ professionalism and ethical standards are not qualified.
Let’s talk about the public. Although the film did not specifically shoot this group, the attention of the people has always been the key to the rescue operation. At first, the male protagonist was trapped. After the report was ridiculed, everyone had deep sympathy for the man to show that he was a kind and caring righteous person. Ironically, as a fickle animal, people's sympathy will expire and patience is limited. When a rescuer accidentally died, everyone’s attitude changed 180 degrees. What impressed me the most was that the mother of the dead threw eggs at the man’s wife and condemned her because of the male protagonist. The old woman who lost her mind because of her son’s grief, did not blames to the construction team of the tunnel or the government. Instead, she blames to the male protagonist’s wife, who is also a victim.
Public opinion is sometimes terrible. "Tunnel" fully reflects this. The so-called 65% agreed to restart the work. They feel that the male protagonist can hardly live anymore. Or do they think that there is no need to cause huge economic losses due to one person? As a result, public opinion became a tool for politicians to ask the wife to agree to give up the rescue. From the beginning to the end, the wife is full of a strong sense of guilt. She feels so sorry for that so many people are only trying to save her husband. Thus she thankfully cooks for them. However what she may not know is that there may not be a few people in this large group who really want to save the man.
