How Quitting Smoking Changed My Finances — and My Life.

One of the often-touted benefits of quitting smoking is the money that a former smoker can save. Matt Berry, a 33-year-old designer of radiant heat systems from Denver, was accustomed to buying a pack of cigarettes every day. “It was just part of my daily budget,” Berry says. “I didn’t really think of it as that big of a financial burden — that is, until I quit.”
Berry has saved exactly $1,950.99 over 10 months, 26 days, 16 hours, and 13 minutes. “But,” he says, with a nod to the app, “who’s counting?”

Money can be a real motivator to quit smoking. Maureen O’Brien, CNS, a master-certified tobacco treatment specialist at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, recalls a 37-year-old patient with metastatic breast cancer who quit so she could save up and buy a ring to leave her daughter in case she passed away.
