5 Historical Attraction Objects in Banda Aceh

  1. Tomb of Sultan Iskandar Muda

Iskandar Muda was the great sultan of the kingdom of Aceh Darussalam.Iskandar Muda came to power in 1607 to 1636. As Iskandar Muda took office, the royal power of Aceh Darussalam reached the Malay peninsula in Malaysia.

Iskandar Muda is buried near Krueng Daroy which is adjacent to Meuligoe Governor of Aceh and Museum Aceh. In the cemetery there are also a number of other sultan's tombs.

It is said that the tomb of Sultan Iskandar Muda was eliminated by the Dutch during the war. But thanks to the instructions given by the former empress of one of the sultans in 1952 the grave was rediscovered.

  1. Kherkoff Peujut

Kherkoff is the largest Dutch cemetery outside the country, the area reaches 3.25 ha. In the cemetery dwelling 2,200 bodies of Dutch soldiers who died in Aceh during the colonial period first. Not only the Dutch, at the cemetery there were also some indigenous people allegedly Dutch mercenaries hired to fight against Aceh, they came from Java, Ambon and Manado.

This cemetery is located behind the Aceh Tsunami Museum. Entering the Kherkoff gate you will be greeted with the Dutch language written on the wall of the tomb. At the tombs are also given an explanation of the death of the soldier either because of illness or death in battle. Inside the cemetery there are also a number of Jewish tombs, it is seen from the davis stars depicted on their tombstones.

  1. The Tomb of Banda Aceh Heroes

This cemetery is located in Peuniti, precisely in front of Masjid Peuniti. Inside the cemetery is the remains of Aceh's heroes, TNI soldiers and high-ranking officers.

The burial area reaches 2 hectares. In the cemetery there is also a plaza with the names of the heroes buried in the cemetery.

  1. Baiturrahman Great Mosque

This mosque is probably already very well known to the world. But who knows that this mosque is a silent witness history of Aceh. Built by Sultan Iskandar Muda, until now the mosque pride of society is still standing firm. In 1873 this mosque was burned by the Dutch colonial government. The Dutch thought that the Baiturrahman mosque was the sultan's palace.

The burning of the mosque is a big mistake made by the Dutch. Because, after the burning of this mosque, hundreds of Dutch soldiers must redeem it with death. The anger of the Acehnese culminated in knowing that the Dutch had dared to burn the place of worship. Out of fear, the Dutch finally rebuilt the mosque.

Once renovated several times, Baiturrahman highway mosque remains a favorite religious tourism site in Aceh. In 2004 when the tsunami hit the city of Banda Aceh, the mosque was not destroyed, the flood only climbed in the courtyard of the mosque.

  1. Aceh State Museum

The Museum of Aceh was established during the reign of the Dutch East Indies. The inauguration was conducted by the Dutch East Indies Military Governor H.N.A Swart and headed by FW Stammeshaus. Initially the Aceh museum was limited to rumoh Aceh only.

In this museum stored various relics of the ancient kingdom of Aceh past and a number of ancient manuscripts. One of the most popular heritage objects is the bell of Cakradonya, which is 1,400 years old. The Cakradonya bell is a gift from Admiral Muhammad Cheng Ho who was given to the kingdom of Pasai Ocean.
