Teuku Umar was born in Meulaboh Aceh Barat in 1854, was the son of a Uleebalang named Teuku Achmad Mahmud from a marriage with the sister of King Meulaboh. Umar had two sisters and three brothers.
The ancestor of Umar Datuk Makudum Sati came from Minangkabau. One of the descendants of Datuk Makudum Sati had merit against the Sultan of Aceh, who at that time was threatened by a Sagi Commander who wanted to seize power. Thanks to his services, the person was appointed as Uleebalang VI Mukim with Teuku Nan Ranceh. Teuku Nan Ranceh has two sons namely Nanta Setia and Ahmad Mahmud. After Teuku Nan Ranceh's death, Nanta Setia replaced his father's position as Uleebalang VI Mukim. He had a daughter named Cut Nyak Dhien.
Little Teuku Umar is known as a bright, brave, and sometimes belligerent boy with his peers. He also has a strong nature and never give up in the face of all problems. Teuku Umar never gained formal education. Nevertheless, he is capable of being a strong, intelligent, and brave leader.
ü Beginning of the Struggle of Teuku Umar
The Netherlands was informed that the one who led the Aceh resistance and that stands out ever since was Teuku Umar. For three consecutive days since August 16, 1878, Teuku Umar led the attack. Associated with the Dutch assault plan against the Land Village in 1877, Umar had presided over the struggle and been a local peoples defense commander since that year at the age of 18.
Teuku Umar came to Monasik, Aceh Besar, in mid-July 1878, not yet a month Ibrahim lamnga (first husband Cut Nya 'Din) died in the battle against the Dutch at Sla Gletaron. Umar has extensive family relationships. He is no stranger but is already a family member for the people of Aceh Besar, especially for residents XXV Mukim. The area of defense during Aceh Besar is at XXV Mukim. After his marriage with Cut Nya'Din, Teuku Umar returned to West Aceh. He and his wife are both actively continuing to lead the war. Umar tried to thwart the Dutch against the kings in the area to deviate. In March 1879, the king of Meulaboh, Teuku Chi ', passed away. Because all of his children became fighters, the Dutch outsmarted that a man named Teuku Itam Abaih could replace Teuku Chi '. That's why it gets hot. In an attempt to thwart the Dutch seepage into Patih (pate), a port north of Meulaboh, Teuku Umar went there to galvanize popular resistance. In 1881, the Dutch tried to land their troops in Patih after firing at this port with a ship's cannon. Thanks to the intact resistance of Teuku Umar, the Dutch landings could be thwarted. After that Teuku Umar went to Ruejaih, another port in West Aceh. Besides, Teuku Umar could strengthen the people's power, so that the Dutch influence on the king of Rigas, who had previously acknowledged Dutch.
