Riding a big green wheel

in #actifit6 years ago

I decided to give my legs a break from the stresses of running today and went for a cycle ride instead. I had been wanting to check out the #Biggleswade Green Wheel. This is one of a number of walking and cycling routes around towns in Bedfordshire. Biggleswade is just north of Arlesey, where I live, and not too bad to cycle to. You can do a fair bit of the route off the roads. I joined the wheel at Jordan's Mill, where the breakfast cereals are made. The route is a mix of surfaces, but some will be improved. Some of it is in the countryside, but you have to pass through part of the town.

This is another mill in town that may have been converted to housing.

I hadn't seen Shortmead manor house before. Looks nice and is apparently used for weddings.

Shortmead
Yes, that's my finger. I used my little action camera.

The route is pretty flat. There are a couple of level crossings and it passes under the A1 road. I did take a few diversions where I lost the track. There's a huge housing development to the east of town and you could not get through areas where they are still building. I did manage to ride most of the wheel, but they could do with a few more signs. There is a longer route that is for walkers only.

It was pretty chilly first thing and my hands got cold, but it warmed up later. The sun was shining and that helped. I was taking it steady as I wanted to keep going. I did speed up a bit on the way back to try and and keep up with some other cyclists. There were lots about and most gave me a nod or 'good morning'.

I was feeling tired by the end, but it was an enjoyable ride. I may do it again some time.

I've lost a little more weight recently. That's less to lug around when I'm running.

The building in the first pic is really really nice, it makes me think to a romantic weekend ^_^
Happy cycle ride, Steve!

A couple of years ago my wife and I bought bikes again. Riding was natural but man did that hurt in the beginning!

This ride was not too painful. Maybe I'm getting used to it

Jenny (my ex girlfriend) Works at Jordans mill restaurant, a hot spot for cyclists, you should also try the cycle route from Sandy to Bedford.

I've eaten there before. I could use the train to get to other places I can cycle. Got a friend who may come with me

My exercise this weekend was beginning Spring cleaning. We still have a long way to go and in the future I am going to be shoveling some mulch. I have to get rid of the two inches of snow we got last night first though. This looks like a really enjoyable ride!

You always seem to have work to do. I did some gardening too as well as cleaning out the chickens

Yeah, @mrsbozz is basically a slave driver :) It's been a weird couple of months weather wise. Hopefully we can settle into some kind of normalcy soon so that I can start getting things done.

The specific reasons vary depending on the type of vehicle. Two distinct examples immediately come to mind.

Example #1. The Tractor.

This John Deere tractor makes use of large diameter tires on the rear driving axle and small tires in the front for steering.

Tractors use rear wheel drive because they are designed to tow trailers or pull lawn mowing/tilling equipment. Dynamically speaking, adding a trailor to a vehicle increases the down force on the rear wheels while having no effect on the front wheels. Similarly, a snow plow add-on will, in use, potentially decrease the down force on the front tires while having minimal effect on the rear tires.

Big tires on the driven rear axle allow for more grip and reduce the chances of the vehicle digging itself into a rut or getting stopped by a low barrier.

Big tires mean more surface area resulting in less soil compaction, which is good for farmers tilling fields.

OK got it! Big tires are good for tractors, so why the small tires on the front?

*Smaller tires are a lot cheaper to buy and design around, and are easier to replace.

*Smaller front wheels allow the vehicle to make tighter turns. A very tall front tire would hit the engine block if turned too sharply. For those massive tractors that require all wheel drive (and so all big tires), a different steering mechanism must be used. These designs require a hinge in the center of the chassis.

Eh? Copying text from Quora has little value. My bike has two wheels the same anyway.
