Jones Lake is in the lower mainland (Fraser Valley delta) outside of Chilliwack and September when the huge local crayfish start to make their way closer to the lake-shore.
The local species are known as Signal Crayfish. They are found in numerous freshwater , generally higher elevation lakes. For some as yet unknown reason September has just proven to be "crayfish time!". The best month th catch crayfish. They emerge at dusk as the sun is setting... just walk along the shoreline just after dark with a flashlight and look closely for a minute or two and see if you can spot them.
Baited with beef or pork, (and a $15. to $20. crayfish trap like a crab trap) even a wiener will do for bait, carry it out about 25 feet from shore where it is about 4 feet deep. Leave it overnight, and retrieve your catch in the morning!
To prepare them, rinse them off well they are clean of the mud or sand. gets off of them. Cover them in salt (purge the mud in their systems), then boil 'em up and eat the tail. Similar to lobster! A little butter, a little garlic, mmmmmmm
