Every year I try to do something that reminds me I STILL CAN, That challenges me, That lets me know I am Still dangerous
I want to know that I can protect my family, hold my own in a fight, Survive the Odds..
Most of my adventures are:
Poorly planed, Ill Advised, Under equipped, but always fun.
I am a father to 5 wonderful children and husband to an amazingly understanding women.
They understand my need for adventure.
This trip started with me being over stressed at work, disengaged at home
and on the verge of breaking down. Life was like digging a hole in the sand beside a lake
trying to dig the hole deep enough to drain the water. ( that's a snob story and not the point of this one)
i needed to get back in touch with who I am.
"Ordinary"and "routine" seems to eat away at my very soul.
One night I was playing on Google Maps looking for the next adventure and I came across this lake,
remote location, stories of bad weather, tails of people dying, Animal attacks
And it wasn't touristy. I knew this was the lake for me.
The stories were not lies either. As I researched the lake I found that just the year before two conservation officers went missing while on the lake and were not found,
many boats have been sunk and with poor satellite coverage ( due to the mountains ) calling out was next to impossible
Search and rescue Said not to go, locals warned against it, my friends were backing out... I was falling in love.
This lake was made by the mica dam being built and they didn't log the valley beforehand so
as the trees root bundles slowly lose their grip on what used to be the ground ( now lake bed with 300- 1000 feet of water above them) these trees come to the surface vertically. As they rise they break though the surface of the water straight into the air 50 or 60 feet before falling to the side and my boat is an inflatable.
As I was planning this trip, I invited some other guy friends but one by one they all come up with some lame excuse like
"I cant i have to work" or "its my kids birthday". I was pretty disheartened, Normally my friends are game for whatever crazy plan I can dream up.
So I opened it to anyone that wanted to come. It ended up being My wife ( loralei), my ex girlfriend(Christena), a German girl and her brother ( Judith and David) and me(Jeremy). ( If no one was going to come it would have just been me and my dog)
I told them is is my trip and I am doing it for me, So here are the rules." you can pack whatever you want as long as it fits in your back pack. " " I don't care what you bring only what is in my bag concerns me." " so be smart about what your bringing". I put my foot down!
However I was now bringing my wife and ex-girlfriend, they are friends so my rules didn't matter anymore.
Because of the length of the trip and my rules being thrown out I had to bring a second boat to haul extra gas and supplies. We would just tie it behind and toe it for the journey and it actually worked out really well.
We launched the boats early afternoon. The sky was blue but the water was choppy and it was slow going getting situated.we had to move stuff around a few time to get the weight distributed correctly, then things went a bit smoother.
We made it 25 km on day one ( because of the late start), and made camp, while my wife made supper I was walking around camp to make a bathroom and to look for animal tracks, I found Mountain lion and Bear tracks no more than 100 feet from our camp site. but the tent was set up already so we decided to ignore the signs.
While everyone else slept in the tent I slept in a hammock beside the tent, with my shot gun to be on the look out for predators, should one fancy a snack.
Somewhere around 3 am I woke up to a noise around the tent.
I got up slowly, the moon was high and bright. The shot gun was loaded.
I could hear breathing and low growls.... it was on and i was ready. Scared but ready.
I walk slowly around the tent expecting a cougar or bear to be sniffing around. My hands gripped the gun
(finger off the trigger Always practice gun safety) Then...
Its late I will continue in a few days good night.!
