I started to plan some Spring activities last night, and came across some pictures of one of our favorite outdoor activities.....GEOCACHING!
For those of you who are unfamiliar with it, geocaching can be most simply(and humorously) described as using multi-billion dollar government technology to find pieces of Tupperware hidden away in the woods! It can, however, be much more or much less than that as well.
Here is a great picture of my son's first find...A watertight ammo box filled with goodies:
Basically, you hide and seek caches placed by others that take part in the game. All the GPS coordinates are logged on a website including users' logs, profiles, and achievements. The website www.geocaching.com is where you need to register, and has a great deal of tutorials and explanations. It has been described as "The world's largest treasure hunt."

These cashes can be placed in the city as well, although you certainly attract a lot of negative attention if you appear like you are rummaging to look for a box in a city.
Each cache should have a description on the website that speaks to its difficulty level. How much hiking, what kind of elevations, and the difficulty of the hide are all major factors used by you to decide if it is one you'd like to attempt. Not all caches are kid friendly, and some are downright crazy difficult!

I've done it a few times and found some pretty cool stuff. One geocache even had a 20 euro bill in it with a note that said "take me". I usually put some coins and keychains in myself.
The best thing about it is that it's really something you can do all over the world. I have seen some very distant locations on geocaching.com

Yes, I agree it is awesome that you can do it practically anywhere. Sometimes I fit in a cache or two when I travel with work.
A few summers ago I was into Geocaching. I liked it. I did it with a group once and reactions were mixed. You will find places that you probably drove by a 100 times and never knew what it was. Watch out for caches on private property though.
Yup, good point. If the guidelines are followed, caches are usually fine.

It’s a great time Brian. You can use an app on your phone as the GPS. There are tons of easy ones in our area for kids!

Then use a free app called cachebot. You need sign into that app with your geocaching credentials. I can show you more on Monday if you get stuck.
