Sometimes, you just have to risk it.
For those of you who know that I traveled to Cave Point County Park up in Door County, Wisconsin, you may have seen that some kids were jumping off of the cliffs there into Lake Michigan.
Now that was an opportunity that I was having a hard time resisting, but I was not sure if such activity was even legal. I even went and looked at the posted rules to see if they would give me any insight.
Nothing on the "official list" of prohibited activities mentioned it, so I decided to just go for it and see what happened.
PAPA TAKES THE PLUNGE
FREEDOM?
I personally find it unfortunate that one would even have to consider the legality of certain activities like this. Where I grew up, we would spend a lot of our summers jumping out of trees into local lakes, or swinging into them on huge rope swings. Eventually, it seemed that people who worked for the county would always cut them down. They got rid of a lot of trees around some of those lakes just to prevent us from having fun in that manner.
I find it sad that such outdoor activities are restricted, prohibited, and prevented. I know that risks are involved, but I know of more people who drowned in those lakes from just swimming than from jumping out of trees. (Actually, I can't even remember anyone getting hurt form jumping out of the trees into the lakes.)
After seeing signs like this posted in the area, I figured that any potential responsibility for my actions would rest on my shoulders, and I would be to blame for anything that happened to me.
I'm going to go ahead and conclude that I did not do anything illegal here, but I wish that I did not even have to consider it. I really want to head back and take some more jumps off of the cliffs, but we will see if time permits. I did have fun making the video though!
BONUS: A SHORT COMIC FOR THE "NON-VIDEO" FOLKS
I know that some people have limited data and others just don't watch the videos. When I watched the video myself, I thought that I said some pretty funny things in it, so I snapped stills from different parts of it to make this progressive comic. Enjoy it.

Well deserved! :)
What?
All these laws are a result of people not using common sense and looking for anyone else they can to blame their own mistakes on. Some people believe suing people is an occupation. I swim in a place kind of like this with a big rock to jump off about 30 feet up. I love it. I don't swim in pools we ALWAYS go to the river.
I think all these laws are a result of 40 years of cultural marxism, chipping away at our ability to take responsibility, day by day. One rule here, another fine there. Oh and lets not forget creeping tax's
let big government make decisions for you, and how to live your life.
If evil ever had a face, it's called governments' laws
meep
Good meep...
meep
If it is illegal, there is evidence on the blockchain of you doing it
They'll have to catch me first!
OOPS...
Nice gif. If there's no sign posting it's illegal--and I didn't see any from you posted, I'd say you're in the clear!
Oh that was cool!!! I want to jump too ... It looks like a place I went a lot when I was still living in Cuba called Canasi. But it is not a lake, is directly at the sea
oh hell yeah i like water you can see the bottom.
You are correct, that looks quite similar. Interesting. Thank you!
That place is a paradise😍.
I have one pure technical question if you don't mind. - How did you make this video? I mean, did you hold the camera (and if Yes - how?) or somebody else was going along with you?
I held a GoPro in my hand and recorded myself.
Thanks for the reply!
I like the comic book captions....when is the comic book "the peppers" coming out?
Not sure. I may have to get on that!
if not mandated it's prohibited.
They might as well give us timetables for when to eat, shit and sleep.
lol I need one i forget
Land of the free, eh?
not lately.
lol
hohoho
I love the sign that says "Dangerous Conditions Exist". Why yes, yes they do, that's what makes life fun isn't it :D
It is what makes life fun, isn't it? Thanks mate!
Maybe you should head to Hawaii and do some cliff diving at South Point on the Big Island?? It's only 50 feet.
Cool! I once stood on a 90 and climbed down to 60 instead. A 50 footer would be cool, especially in Hawaii!
Here is a few photos:
Very cool! Also, thanks for the REAL COMMENTS!
That's because I am a real person @papa-pepper lol and thanks for the full power upvote! BTW, I grow peppers and make pepper jams and sell at the marker. everybody here knows me as The Big Island Pepper lady.
Very cool! I've been growing for some years now and have an extensive pepper seed collection. What kinds are your favorite?
Definately the Ghost Pepper ..it has that delayed kick!!
I always find some laws to be a bit of a joke anyway. Like the ones creating victims out of everyone because you have the ability to think for yourself. It's pretty stupid to me how many needless laws exist, but people allow it.
There sure are a lot of jokes, I agree, and you are correct, we (collectively) have allowed it to happen.
In an hot day, this would be probably even suggested! "Cool" jump in a hot place
Good point! I really enjoyed it either way, illegal or not!
hahaha pissing myself laughing. beautiful place too
Thank you for the information .. this is good news .. hopefully many who ngevoted you .. follow me maybe we can be friends well
What a fun post! lol
Thanks! Glad that you liked it!
Hey @papa-pepper, thanks a lot for this comic! It summarizes the whole post too and didn't make people like me feel sad that we are losing something by skipping the video. Most of the times, it appeared to me that I missed the whole message in the post as I didn't watched the video. And what a surprise today. I was reading your post after quite a while and when I reached to the video link, a thought passed that I should unfollow this guy to save myself from starting to read a post which finally ends with a video. But thankfully, the post continued even after the video and ended up with a comic as surprise gift. For the first time, I came across a post which cared for people who can't always afford to watch a video. I'm very grateful to you for such a compassionate gesture. Thanks a lot!
Amazing, and I actually had you in mind as well as some others. Between the comic and gif, you pretty much get to experience the video.
It blesses me to hear how you appreciated it.
Yes, I can't tell you how much I appreciated this. I know how much effort goes into making a gif and a comic to appease a small minority of your readers. I hope everyone else too found it interesting. Thanks again! Would you mind if I make a small tip! post ed here?

Wow this is a wonderful place! We also have place like this in our country, like in Palawan and Siquijor here in Philippines. I hope you can visit them, p.s. it's legal to jump off the cliff into the sea there! By the way i'm new here in steemit, please feel free to drop by my profile @asbonclz and see my posts, thanks and God bless!
That sounds like a great time. I wish I could check them out sometime.
Very good @papa-pepper.
laws are usually only posted to avoid being sued or to generate revenue.
There is a lot of revenue being generated some places.... Just saying...
thats the great thing about rules.. if it don't say dont do it. you can Do it! ;)

@pappa-pepper this is pure awesomeness! I mean it. You can write words about freedom all day long but seeing you being free more and more every way gives me energy to keep working towards my goals. I love this post!
Very encouraging @sumsum. Thank you!
Ignorance of the law is not an excuse.
This basically means that they can come up with a law, rule or prohibition and not even bother to properly make it public but still punish us for breaking it.
There could easily have been a hidden sign prohibiting what you did.
Ooooh! Now that sounds like fun! Like a demented game of hide and seek, where you spend most of your life looking for hidden signs with hidden laws posted on them, and then at the end, you find one that reads:
It is illegal to look for hidden signs with laws posted on them! ;-)
Actually, actively looking for those signs makes you reasonably suspicious and that is enough for authorities is some places to investigate your activities, question you, or even detain you.

Thanks for your post @papa-pepper and your thoughts about unnecessary regulations. As we hear of in Europe, regulations in the US can sometimes be quite ridiculous like "don't put your cat in the microwave";-) If you like jumping from cliffs, we've just been to the Calanques in Marseille, France and there you can jump from wherever you want and there is no sign or law enforcement telling you not to jump! Enjoy!https://steemit.com/travel/@liflorence/travel-with-me-to-calanques-national-park-near-marseille
Cool. Thanks for that! It looks like an incredible place!
Man, that water looks beautiful. You're lucky to find a spot like that.
It was a beautiful place indeed!
Hahaha very nice comic creation @papa-pepper i really enjoy your non video comic edition :)
Glad to hear it!
:)
@papa-pepper That is SO awesome! I have only ever done something like that once in my life and it was unquestionably the most exhilarating thing I have ever done! Scary... but totally worth it!!
I completely agree with you - the decision should rest with each individual when it comes to the risks involved in doing something like that.
Looks like you had a complete "JOL" (pronounced jawl) - South African word for " a really good time" :)
It was a really good time -JOL- for sure!
:D
Things like this should be perfectly legal as risk is part of life anyway. We should be able to decide what risks we are willing to take and what risks we aren't. I'm sure driving is actually more dangerous than jumping into a lake for a person that knows how to swim, but driving is still legal, so why would enjoying nature not be?
Now if a particular lake or tree offer particularly high danger to the safety of people there, than some restrictions might be warranted, but that is not the general case. The only other reason not to enjoy nature would be if you are destroying it by doing so and I would also support restrictions if the flora and fauna in the lake is suffering significantly because of human leisure activities there. But besides that, it should all be fair game.
Humanity is becoming more and more lame.
My question for you is "if it were not permitted to jump would you have NOT jumped?"
There have certainly been times when I have disagreed with the law and acted in a manner which demonstrated it.
I am sure about that.
Blessings Brother~*~
If it weren't for that camo- let's just say I'm seriously considering fashioning my own camo full body swim suit. Anything less is just asking for trouble ;)
That is right. They can't catch you if they can't see you!
Was it cold? Lol!
I have to ask, did anyone try to chastise you when you got out? There always seems to be someone around that decides they need to police things, even when you're doing nothing wrong, because THEY have decided it's wrong, or dangerous or a bad example...
Can't seem to walk through this life without stepping on someone's toes! Lol
It was cold, but nobody said anything that I heard, so that was a plus.
This is a wonderful place..
Thanks for sharing..
Nice gifs , so sweet pics and video..
Thank you once again @lordoftruth.

Hey, @papa-pepper! That was really cool. Those caves are interesting. It is too bad that nowadays, you even need to stop to consider if something is legal or not. We are having all the fun regulated out of our lives. I remember being on a school board and having an argument on whether or not the children should be allowed to play in the school when there was too much snow. Define how much is too much, 2 inches, one foot or more? What ever happened to common sense? I guess it's not all the common :(
Not all that common indeed.
The Bonus was a very cool touch to your post.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
Lake Michigan that is that far from me. But I know you are up in Wisconsin right now and not near the shores on my end of the lake. (it is actually about 3 hours north of me to the Indiana Dunes and Lake Michigan, glad you had a good time, it is sad so many swimming holes used when we were kids are no longer swimming holes, I don't know why people gotta ruin kids having fun.
They always gotta ruin the fun for the kids.
They wonder why so many kids are in trouble, it is because everything fun we use to do as kids is illegal now.
Exodus is a fantastic wallet.
