Bosses are nightmares if they want to be, they have an annoying way of having their own way. The truth is that almost everyone would have to work under one boss one way or the other, even not presently, later on. It is advisable to learn how to cope with one.
Boss refers to someone that makes decisions, supervises, directs and exercises control over workers. Bosses could be nice or be tough, but one sure thing is that their behavior toward each worker varies.
There are bosses that are popularly known to be nice but to some of their workers are wicked.
It is down to how well workers can cope with such bosses. There are some steps to take and do if one wants to be on the good books of bosses. No matter how bad a person is, to someone such person is an angel. Better to be in good terms with your boss.
If you have a difficult boss and the person has been a constant pain in the ass, there are ways of making things easy between you two. Read through them and stay true to yourself.
• Know what you are going into:
This is the first step, and it requires self-honesty. You need to know what you really want to do about the situation. Weigh your options and see if such boss is worth working for or if the pay is worth the difficulty. You have to be sure that if you call it quits you would not have yourself to blame financially. It is better to stay off such bosses if there are better options.
• Understand his/her temperament:
Pay attention to his/her temperament and learn how to understand it. If the boss shouts and nag about things, with time you should not be moved with shouting. And if the boss is of the silent type when angry, paying attention to details would make you find out soon enough. Knowing the temperament makes it easy for a worker to deal with the boss.
• Listen diligently and ask questions:
Practice the active listening skills with your boss, active listening refers to hearing what the other party is saying objectively. You must be patient enough to pick details from what he/she is saying and must not shy away from asking questions when not clear. Asking questions at the right time is not bad, it shows you are willing to learn and almost all boss likes that. What they don’t like actually is asking unnecessary questions constantly or acting on your orders.
• Learn how to pour out your heart:
Your boss might be a daredevil, whenever he/she is frustrating the hell out of you and you are angry or down, do not bottle it up. Learn how to pour them all out, choose a trusted family or friend to tell. Saying them out would relieve you of your tensions and frustrations, it also gives you the extra energy to carry on whenever the boss is proving difficult simply because you have someone to share things with.
• Stroke the ego:
Every boss loves the idea of their workers stroking their egos, no matter how they might say they don’t. Make sure you find out what makes him/her happy, and what turns him/her off too. Once you learn what they love, make sure your actions are aligned in that direction. And try as much as possible to stay away from the turn-offs.
Bosses could be friends too depending on how well you handle your relationship with them, they are humans too and hopefully you would be one too later on. Bosses are everywhere not just in workplaces, that lecturer giving you hard time in your project work is also your boss.
