This is a segment from our full interview with Brian Stofiel of Stofiel Aerospace.
In this segment, Brian and Alex discuss the origin story of Stofiel Aerospace and it's family roots. It’s a great story of a father and daughter starting over fresh and starting a business where their passions lie: Space and the final frontier. Once they had a payload to launch into space, they were stuck waiting 4-7 years just to potentially get a spot to launch on a rocket. Instead, Brian looked to his daughter and her idea helped create their new and innovated launch system that could bring access to space to everyone someday!
They also speak on what happens in a complex industry when the experts believe they are the only ones with answers, when another industry may have the answer to the same problem. Brian coined the term, "industry bias", and we talked about why "fresh eyes" in a company can be so valuable for innovation within a company. I (Alex) shared my experience with industry bias in plastics manufacturing and how my boss was smart enough to look to the younger generation starting in the industry to help see things with fresh eyes and find news ways to improve their work.
We close this segment discussing how 3D printing will change the world! Brian talks about how on demand manufacturing will change retail and how we look at consumer markets like amazon and Walmart. I (Alex) share my comparison of 3D printing to the telephone, and how much more we have to improve when it’s already changed the world in its infant stages.
Please let us know what you think! Ask any questions you might have for Brian or myself and I’ll do my best to answer them in the comments!
