It is hard to imagine living in an environment that has more predators lurking in the grass. I guess, I should be more afraid of the city thugs than the animals, but I'm a city kid, you build that street smart. I guess it is also true for the wild. Survival instinct kicks in.

Yes indeed. I have had the benefit of spending lots of time in the bush, and you have to love AND respect it. Nature is a tough love mother.
