One of the things that affect people in life includes books they read. Reading is one of the best ways to bring up children and the habit of reading for pleasure is the key to developing these skills.
A good book has a salutary effect on the mind of its reader. It elevates the spirit and thoughts. Its augments is store of knowledge. Books help in correcting moral ineptitude, especially in these days of mechanical existence. The best sources of acquiring knowledge are books.
Reading brings about revolutionary change in the outlook of a person. It keeps a person busy when he has nothing else to do. No country can dream of meaningful development if its citizens cannot read books.
It is however, said that reading culture is fast declining across the world. The declining interest in reading, especially among youths today, gives cause for concern and is a challenge to all. Perhaps, it is right to say that the reading culture is basically dead. One of the factors responsible for this is materialism. In Africa today, most people are not interested in embarking on corresponding financial gain. Second, our socio-economic environment is not convenient for reading.
Also, the decline in the standard of education and rising cost of books in the country has seriously affected the reading culture of the country.
Nevertheless it is encouraging to note that the national library of Nigeria is gradually coming up the strategies to stimulate the reading culture in the country. The management of the library has been hosting seminars and workshops, as well as other public enlightenment programmes to help resuscitate the reading culture in the country. Apart from this, there is a plan to open more libraries across the country. Already, the Akwa Ibom State Government has opened an E-library, one adjudged the best in the country.
