Africa has been traumatized by a myriad of challenges- slave trade, colonialism etc. Yet, the people of Africa has broken free from the chains and pains of colonialism to create a new identify. An identical forged with gold and finished with excellence. Africans in the diaspora are known and identified as a tough, hard-working and success-driven people. No wonder the Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) in 2017 observed that, “The descendants of slaves have made their mark as inventors, economists and jurists; as authors and scholars; as artists and athletes; as politicians and civil rights leaders."
Considering hard-working and success-driven nature of Africans, the potentials of Africans in the diaspora is bright and unlimited. To justify this assertion let's take a look at the records and history made by Africans in the diaspora.
Anthony Oluwafemi Olaseni Joshua, is professional boxer. He is currently a unified world heavyweight champion.
Mae Jemison is an African engineer, physician and NASA astronaut. She became the first African American woman to travel in space.
Ufot Ekong is a Nigerian student who broke a 50 year old academic record in Japan by Graduating with a first class degree and best overall student from Tokai University, Tokyo.
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is a Nigerian writer. Her first novel, ‘Purple Hibiscus’, won the 2005 Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for Best First Book.
Philip Emmanuel Emeagwali: He is a Nigerian-born engineer. He is a winner of the 1989 Gordon Bell Prize for his use of a Connection Machine supercomputer to help analyse petroleum fields.
Gone are the days Africans claim 'street credibility.' Going by the potentials and records of Africans in the diaspora, Africans can now lay claim to an international credibility and identify one forged with gold and excellence.
