Today I was tasked with finding a new laptop computer for my parents. They had certain requirements: more than one USB, comfortable screen, touch screen (!!!), large storage and lots of memory.
Their budget was pretty good, but when it's "Black Friday" weekend and their son is on the job, you're gonna get everything you want at a fraction of what they may expect.
It's not a super computer, but it is well built. It's a Levono i3 series. It's a metal cast (not plastic), 15.6" screen 16:10 ratio, built in speakers and mic, THREE USB ports (hard to find anymore), 8 hour battery.
Built in webcam, bright screen (300nits) and best of all (by request) a touch screen! Many laptops with touch-screen had to be high-end, but not this one!
I was happy with the specs:
- Windows 11 PRO
- 15.6" screen 1920x1080
- Intel i3 (3.7 Ghz) Processor
- 40 GB RAM (wow!)
- 1 TB SSD (wow again!)
- Bluetooth / 802.11 wireless
- built in keyboard with numberpad
- Integrated graphics card (ok)
I used to sell PC's and laptops many years ago, going back into the 1990's. Man, I'm old. The PC's back then were going for between $2500 - $3500 on average. Even a printer back then was a few hundreds of dollars. RAM was measured in Megabytes and we used to think nobody would EVER fill a TWO GIGABYTE hard drive (lol).
(Monitor NOT included)
This are the specs from an average GATEWAY PC from 1997 when I worked for the company. I sold many, many of these computers, like hotcakes.
Once you add a monitor and any accessories like a printer, this would easily come to over 3K. Then add in freight cost and tax. Whew!
By comparison, the laptop that I found for my parents cost $450.00. Craziness! 1000x the computer at 1/10th the price! Amazing the difference 27 years can make!
With inflation factored in, my parents only spent about $230 in 1997 dollars for this "perfect laptop". People don't sell laptops and computers anymore, websites sell laptops and computers these days.
What an amazing thing. Here's a link to the laptop, Black Friday (Cyber Monday) sale.

Teach Your Children Liberty from Sin
We encourage parents to teach their children principles of Godliness, beginning with the Word and an understanding who God is and what His Son has done to form a relationship with us.
No one can lay a foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, or straw, his workmanship will be evident, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will prove the quality of each man’s work. 1 Corinthians 3:11-13
Teach Your children Liberty from Tyranny
Second to this is the principle of self-determination and freedom, lest we loose the ability to teach our children the first principle in future generations.
Our children read the Tuttle Twin books, specifically to learn libertarian principles, which most people learn later in life. These books are useful for our family, and yours, to teach children concepts that seem complicated, but are made simple in these books.
I am an affiliate for Libertas Publishing, your purchase will help our family grow financially.

That's a bang for the buck laptop. I bought something similar a year ago. I don't need high graphics for gaming. Just enough for my work, watching youtube and posting on Hive 😀

It looks like a good computer!👍😊
I don’t know why they keep cutting back on USB ports …
Three ports that’s very handy to have, they will enjoy the computer!😊
I was shocked how many laptops only have one or two USB ports! !BBH
Crazy, I'm not sure why!!!🙄

Wow squared, when I saw the technical specifications, wow 40 Gb of RAM, that's memory power, I have a desktop computer with just 8 gb of ram and I take care of it like you have no idea, because it's the only thing I have.
I think I will order one for Christmas, LOL.

It's not cheap, but it's not expensive for what you get. !BBH

That's a pretty great deal; 40 GM RAM!! All are fantastic. The only thing that is "low" is the processor; i3!
Amazing laptop!
It'll be here Wednesday, so we shall see if it's as good as the specs imply. !BBH

Not only the 27 years, but the manufacturing too.
27 years ago the computers were built to last.
They were quality.
Nowadays, especially the laptops, often have very poor quality.
Many laptops nowadays last for only a few years.
Speaking of 27 years, this laptop probably will be nowhere 27 years later, but you can still use 27 years old PCs and laptops.
But of course time will tell.
Generally the older the computer the better.
More quality, more durability, more trustedness.
That's a fair point. They used to make them with extremely high standards, now they're mass produced with every corner cut. I was happy to hear this is made of metal, so many laptops are plastic these days. !BBH

Really WOW, 40GB RAM!
I don't really understand computer building and specs myself, but I thought 16GB RAM was a lot for todays standards.
I myself have 8GB RAM and I'm quite happy with it.
The previous laptop I got for my parents only had 4 GB RAM and 120 GB SSD. Either 8 or 16 is standard and only the highest end laptops have 32. 40 GB is really a lot! !BBH

All the specifications it has are quite good and these are all the things we need in a laptop so that it doesn't slow down and works fast.
I'm hoping with these specs my parents will use it for a long time. !BBH

Now to be fair, that Gateway Destination system includes an enormous (for the time) 31" CRT (no doubt absurdly heavy) monitor. But I know what you mean. In 1993 I paid $3k for a 486 DX2-66 with a 15-inch monitor, 16 MB RAM, and 340 MB hard drive and even then the modem and sound card were purchased separately later (though it did include a 1x CD-ROM).
Does seem like a nice deal on that laptop. The only real negative is the lack of dedicated graphics but of course that only really matters if you are going to be gaming or doing the kind of stuff you would want a professional workstation for. I mean an i7 would be nice too...
Considering how the value of money has changed in the last 20 - 30 years, it's amazing to me that we purchased such expensive technologies for our home. When I was a teen learning MSDOS for the first time, I didn't really think about the actual monetary cost of the machine I was playing with. I mean it was mostly used for KING'S QUEST and LEMMINGS and CIVILIZATION.
The graphics card is really basic and the processor is only an i3. It doesn't say which model i3, except that it's 3.7 Ghz. There was an i5 version for $100 more but I couldn't justify it.
BTW, the sale ended and the price increased by $250. It's being sold for $700 now, got it just in time!
