The aloe family (Aloe spp.) contains more than 400 species, the most well-known of which is aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis), noted for its ability to soothe dry or sunburned skin. Many aloes grow well in rock gardens or arid landscapes in warm climates, and most bloom at least once a year.

Identification
Aloes come from arid climates, and have developed thick, fleshy leaves to conserve water and became adapted to bright light and dry soil. The climates in which they grow depends on the species, but most will not grow well in cool or wet climates. Blooms typically form on tall, stalks, which are sometimes branched and range from white and yellow to orange and red. Because aloes are native to Africa and the Mediterranean region, where they are pollinated by birds, they have developed stalks for the birds to sit on while drinking nectar.

Bloom Time
Aloe bloom times depend on the species, but they often bloom sporadically throughout the year. Aloe vera, which grows in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 10 through 12, usually blooms in summer, although it can bloom at other times, provided it has the right growing conditions. Its flowers are yellow, a common color for aloe plants. Gold-toothed aloe (Aloe x spinosissima) grows in USDA zones 9 through 11 and produces orange flowers in March to April.

Culture
Aloes grow well in warmer climates where winter temperatures do not fall below freezing. In areas where colder temperatures are possible, the plants must be protected if temperatures fall below 32 degrees Fahrenheit for more than a few hours. While they will tolerate full sun, bright, reflected light may become too much for them. In summer, water them every other week, and winter rainfall will take care of them the rest of the year. They prefer sandy, well-draining soil, and you should ensure it is dry before planting them in the ground.

Garden Uses
Aloes do well in low-water environments like dune scapes or rock gardens. Aloe plants work well as edgings or borders, depending on size, and can also be planted in colonies for a dramatic effect. Their sturdy appearance contrasts well with more delicate plants, and they make good additions to perennial or tropical gardens. Aloes are also frequently grown as container plants, both indoors and out.
