RE: The Alphabet Art Challenge - Day Seven- 'G' for Gender

Language defines our thinking, so I support genderneutral speaking. And in the english language it's so much easier. For example in german, when you say 'you could try...' meaning someone, you use the word man. So everytime someone proposes somthing for everyone, it feels, the are only speaking about men. So I think turning freshman into freshers is a really small thing. And about the uniforms, whenever have options been bad? You don't have to wear different ones, when you don't want to. And you can still buy your clothes in what every section of the store you want, but maybe not everyone in the eighties was as brave as you and those today might find it easier to express themselves with lower huddles...

Sort:

With all due respect, perhaps allowing language to define our thinking is where the problem lies. Perhaps we should allow a bit more thinking to define our language.
I have no problem with your identifying as he, she or it. What concerns me is the bottom of the slippery slope where a person could be punished by law for mistakenly calling a spade a spade.

I agree that our thinking should define our speaking, but how do you think, in words, or not? But what do you mean with someone being punished by law, what does spade stand for in this example?

Yes, I think in words, but not PC, gender-neutral words. I don't need any thought control, thanks very much.
I was referring to state control of language such as seen in the recent C-16 bill in Canada.
Calling a spade a spade means to tell it as it is, to call things what they are without beating about the bush.

I dont know the c16 bill. And pc is not about beating around the bush, it still is about being respectful with each other, in my opinion.

Being an intelligent adult I believe I can be trusted to choose the correct words in a given situation. I do not need to be told what is and what is not appropriate. As I said before, I believe state control of language is a dangerous thing indeed.
