ABOUT
The Street Art Cinemart is a boutique event series which promises to deliver exciting local and international graffiti content. The platform debuted in November 2018 in Johannesburg, South Africa with various elements such as the premieres of groundbreaking urban art films, a publications showcase, walking tours through the city to explore the art form in its environment, a diverse group exhibition featuring renowned national artists from multiple cities, as well as a live painting demonstration by one of the country’s most talented artists.Curated by Cale Waddacor, author of South Africa’s first graffiti and street art book, Graffiti South Africa (Schiffer Books USA, 2014), the multi-faceted event aims to bring the work to a new audience while fostering the local scene. The Cinemart is an advocate for the culture and intends to build a positive, educational showcase of urban contemporary art and expression.
2ND EDITION
For the second instalment of the event, new elements such as a sketch club and stencil workshop have been introduced. Graffiti artists share their work on the streets for the enjoyment of others and we would like the public to get involved too. We are also looking to include sketch battles, merchandise and apparel, and a colouring book relating to the exhibition. A new selection of films and exhibiting artists keep the content fresh. The event is held at The Bioscope Independent Cinema and adjacent Chalkboard Cafe in Maboneng, Johannesburg CBD, from 10am until 10pm. Entrance is free, but there is a ticket fee for the cinema programme. Once again we welcome Past Experiences Tours who will run a guided walk through the precinct, while Sharpie South Africa have generously supplied us with marker pens.
