According to the RAE, the stalactites are: "Calcareous rocks in the shape of an irregular cone and with the tip pointing downwards, which is formed in the roof of the caverns by the slow filtration of waters with calcium carbonate in solution."

The stalactites and stalagmites, are part of what is known as speleothems, the term that is They give to the formations of the rocky cavities inside the caves.
