Renewal Blow Fly - Shoo, Fly

Summer Time Friend or Foe

An abject hate of flies, you not alone, with summer rains flies have arrived in our kitchens, buzzing around your face when outdoors, pesky insects that never seem to understand our need to not have them around, swatting normally is our solution to be rid of them. Where is the spay can, I can DOOM them!

Reaching back into our memories we will clearly remember singing "Shoo, Fly, Don't Bother Me!" as children, written by T. Brigham Bishop in 1869, resoundingly popular putting the fly on the hit-parade for life, still being sung by men, woman and children down the ages.

Renewal of summer flies appear out of nowhere.

Around the world there are numerous classifications of flies (actually hundreds of thousands), common residents of South Africa are Blow fly, Fruit fly, Drain fly, Flesh fly, yup includes great Mosquito, House fly, Cluster fly, Horse fly and Crane fly, gangly guy we call daddy long legs. Other than the Mosquito and Horse fly who tend to bring discomfort to humans and animals with an irritating bite, many hovering flies feed on nectar being beneficial to humans.

All have six legs, an anterior head, thorax and posterior abdomen two legs attached to each part of the body. Certain species of flies are used to detect length of death in carcasses where they lay eggs (developing into Maggots). With a timeline used from the insects life cycle, forensic scientist can determine how long a body has been dead for.

Maggots help clean up rotting flesh, therefore become useful to humans when used to clean wounds in the early days, most would likely say "yuck", it is something useful nonetheless.

At the end of the day, like most, treat flies as 'disease carries' the way we were brought up. Renewal of flies arriving after rains reminds one to be particularly cautious by put bones, or left overs into a freezer for collection day, never leaving them in dirt bins allowing flies to multiply rampantly around the home, rinsing dirt bins thoroughly, yes flies smell out all kinds of poop to breed in.

I'm not sure if I could handle treating my wounds with maggots. Still very fascinating how nature works.

Not sure if I would be happy with the treatment either @watersnake101

Merry Christmas!Hi @joanstewart great macro photos ;)

Merry Christmas @doze and thanks for visiting.

wow amazing macro photograph of bee. Thanks for share with us.

Thank you for visiting @tussar11 have a wonderful day.

Wow, amazing macro captures! Did you use focus stacking by any chance or how are the flies so sharp?

Camera is a Canon PowerShot SX730 HS F-stop 3.3 Exposure 1/160 ISO-80 Focal length 4mm taken in full morning sun light, no extra lenses, fly behaved reasonably well with me being so close.

Being a PowerShot I use manual and practice as often as possible to get the photography, some good lessons learned here in Steemit by @keithboone a year or so ago.

Thank you so much! Very interesting, valuable and useful information! I have no comparable lens to test it with but I can work with that!

Hahaha, so many sees flies as the enemy Lady Joan. Yet maggots has healed so many wounds over time. I just wish someone would teach them respect and not to sit on a person's face Lol.
Blessings!

Definitely know how to outstay a welcome when outdoors Stephen, have a lovely Christmas and greetings to Marian and Troy as well.

Well my friend, sit hidden near a dam with the dead body of a bird nearby and having about a hundred flies inspecting one's nostrils and eardrums Lol.
Not a very pleasant occasion and so I share your dislike of the little irritations.
Hope your Christmas day is good!
Blessings to all!

Very educational, @joanstewart! I didn’t know maggots had a purpose. I’m no less grossed out, but at least now I have some respect for them! 😁

Yes they have a purpose, not that I would be happy with them crawling around me @jayna

I am really extremely allergic to flies and the worst is they are always on or following me. The stable flies are worse biting pieces out of you. It is winter now and one follows me since three days. Still not able to swing it into heaven. Nevertheless a great photo and post. 💕

@trendotoken thanks for the update. 👍

Thank you @wakeupkitty and @trendtoken appreciated.

Annoying when you cannot get rid of one, that is when the spray comes in handy even though I don't like using it.

Mid summer here, they breed fast and appear out of nowhere the minute you have food out, mosquitoes tend to be the ones that love having a nibble at me, good luck swatting that fly that is bothering you!

@joanstewart That appearing out of nowhere surprises me too. At times I use a spray too. During summer we cannot stay outside long inside I like to sit in peace without being consumed by...

Enjoy the good weather. ❤️

Great shots and very informative post, as usual. Happy holidays my dear! 😊

Thanks for visiting, have a wonderful last few days in 2019.
