So if you ever want to have a healthy, yummy food, your kids occupied for hours, while learning something about chemistry and make some art all at the same time, I have something for you. I read in a children chemistry box instruction book, that red cabbage is a acid-base indicator and of course I immediately went to our local farmer to get red cabbage.
Wenn ihr schon immer mal gesund und lecker essen, die Kinder stundenlang beschäftigen, dabei gleichzeitig etwas über Chemie lernen und dabei ein bisschen Kunst machen wolltet, habe ich etwas für euch. Kürzlich habe ich in einer Chemie Box Anleitung für Kinder gelesen, dass Rotkohl ein Säure-Basen-Indikator ist, und bin natürlich sofort zu unserem örtlichen Bauern gefahren, um Rotkohl zu kaufen.

If you cut a fresh or dried leaf of red cabbage in little pieces and add hot water (like making a tea), you can extract the violet color - plant pigments called Anthocyane, which are actually very healthy. After 20 minutes you can start painting. And that´s were the fun begins.
Schneidet man ein frisches oder getrocknetes Rotkohlblatt in kleine Stücke und gießt es mit heißem Wasser auf (wie bei einem Tee), kann man die violette Farbe extrahieren – Pflanzenpigmente namens Anthocyane, die sogar sehr gesund sind. Nach ungefähr 20 Minuten kann man mit dem Malen beginnen. Und da geht der Spaß erst richtig los.

All you need additionally is thick paper, better the type you use for aquarell paintings, lemon juice or vinegar (as acid) and baking soda (as base). And for applying the liquids I´d recommend using pipettes instead of brushes.
Alles was man zusätzlich braucht ist dickes Papier, am besten das für Aquarellmalerei, Zitronensaft oder Essig (als Säure) und Natron (als Base). Und zum Auftragen der Flüssigkeiten würde ich Pipetten statt Pinsel empfehlen.

It´s magic to watch how the violet color of the cabbage liquid change to bright pink as soon as you´re adding a drop of acid. If you add an alcaline solution - the opposite of acid - the violet turns blue to green, depending on the concentration. For that we used the baking soda with some water.
Es ist magisch zu beobachten, wie sich die violette Farbe der Kohlbrühe in leuchtendes Pink verwandelt, sobald man einen Tropfen Säure hinzugibt. Wenn man eine alkalische Lösung hinzufügt - das Gegenteil von Säure - wird das Violett je nach Konzentration blau bis grün. Dafür haben wir Natron mit ein wenig Wasser genommen.

The children (and yes, also me) spent hours watching the colors change magically forth and back by adding drops with the pipette and it´s easy for them to create beautiful artworks this way. And I already started dying wood with that stuff.
Die Kinder (und ja, auch ich) haben stundenlang zugesehen, wie die Farben durch das Hinzufügen von Tropfen mit der Pipette auf magische Weise hin und her wechseln und so können sie ganz einfach wunderschöne Kunstwerke schaffen. Und ich habe bereits angefangen, Holz mit diesem Zeug zu färben.
