Arco Parabolico – Show Your Respect for Two Important War Leaders

The Arco Parabolico is known as Parabolic Arch in English and is the monument of Heroes that is located on the Civic walk or boulevard of the city. The monument or arch was built to honor and give a tribute to the war heroes who lost their lives during the Pacific War, especially in honor of Admiral Miguel Grau and Colonel Francisco Bolognesi. The arch monument was inaugurated in the year 1957 on the 28th of August under the government rule of Manuel Prado Ugarteche. The monument has the name of both the war heroes on it making them immortal to people of Peru.

The monument was designed by German technicians and is located at a very prominent location in the civic center of the city. The construction of the monument is in pink stonework that stands at the height of 18 meters and is known for its rupturist style of architecture. The shape of the arch is also compared with the trajectory of a cannonball that is fired into the sky. This monuments is one of the most important and significant with historical connection and is visited by a number of tourists interested in knowing more about the Pacific war.

The monument was declared as the Cultural heritage of the Nation on the 23rd of August in 2018 by the Ministry of Culture. It is considered to be an important patriotic and cultural place where many important activities take place. The pink quarry stones used in the construction of the monument makes it look outstanding and grand. The quarry stones are extracted from the Intiorko and Arunta Hills, same material even used for construction the cathedral of Tacna. There are two statues on either end of the arch. One bronze statue is of Colonel Francisco Bolognesi who had a remarkable participation in the Battle of Arica. The other bronze statue on the other side is of Admiral Miguel Grau who played an important role in maritime defense.

There is a votive lamp that is located around 4 meters from the Parabolic Arch which looks like a bronze disc. The lamp is decorated with swords and anchors which are in eight in number each. It is one of the most visited tourist spots in Tacna and with its presence in the civic walk; it is visited by all the visitors. It also is used as a venue for many ceremonial events, acts and parades of patriotism.
