While researching and writing this project, I wanted to let the readers really know about how often mass shootings occur every year and what it’s like coping with this unfortunate reality as an average teen. While I was working on this project, there had been yet another incident, not a shooting however, but a bombing at the Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, United Kingdom. This impacted what I think about these incidents because I, myself, went to the Ariana Grande concert with my friends back in April at the Pepsi Center, and I couldn’t imagine anyone, including me and my friends, in that horrible situation. I was very shocked to know that everything we do is now at risk and that this could happen at any place, even if it’s intended be safe and fun for everyone. We shouldn’t have to believe that the world we live in can be so cruel. This memoir should open the reader’s eyes to show how mass shootings are becoming the new normal. It’s important to be informed on this topic so we always will be prepared in case something bad happens because no one knows when a mass shooting can occur. We also have to fight. These shootings cause fear and pain in our world that affect people’s lives. Despite what happens, we can’t give in to this fear, we must remain strong and shine a beacon of hope. Even a small light can make the world a better place.
San Bernardino, a city in California recently lost 14 lives due to a mass shooting. In the year of 2015, there had been three hundred fifty five mass shootings in only 336 days in the year, meaning on some days in each month there were 2 or more mass shootings. This is terrifying information. To know that people are in such danger is unnerving. Shootings cause fear. However, we can choose to submit to it or do the harder thing, and remain calm. If we use our influence and support others through this trauma, we can at least help these events be less effective.

As you can see, the rate of mass shootings have definitely increased especially in the recent years. It could be because it’s very simple to get a hold of a gun nowadays and it has become so normal that people don’t even think that much about it when they do it.
hu·man·i·tar·i·an
(h)yo͞oˌmanəˈterēən/
adjective
- concerned with or seeking to promote human welfare.
When I think about the word humanitarian, i think about someone who always puts themselves first in order to help others. A humanitarian is always identifying a person’s needs while still showing empathy towards them. They're not just willing to help others but they’re also passionate about the idea of walking the extra mile to help ease the suffering of those in a crisis. A humanitarian helps those who need help to believe in themselves and to advocate for the difficult situations some might be in.
