Considering this takes individual votes into account and not actual money, could this be the backbone to a sort of third party "reputation system", or would that be too open to abuse?

Sort:  

I think the number of votes in important since it represent the actual number of people that liked a content, and not the power of the people. But the actual system works well, so why make it more complicate?
