I first learned of Maslow's Hierarchy of needs in Psychology 101 and accepted its fundamental description of human needs and development. Imagine my surprise on finding that in much of Latin America it is seen more as a North American aberation than as a foundational part of real psychology. Students of psychology may only discover him in their extracurricular readings in their graduate studies. Apparently we can find such an odd society much closer than a Star Trek universe, just a few thousand miles south of us.
