I agree with all you write. Out of curiosity, have you read "The Dictator's Handbook
Why Bad Behavior Is Almost Always Good Politics" by Bruce Bueno de Mesquita, Alastair Smith and/or "Confessions of an Economic Hitman" by John Perkins. Both are excellent books that hit on many of themes you mention above.
