Visitors to London Zoo got more than they bargained for when they were told to seek safety in nearby buildings
police with guns descended on the zoo in an effort to capture an escaped silverback gorilla named Kumbuka
Kumbaka had fled the zoo's gorilla enclosure after its door was accidentally left open, and he was pursued by the marksmen before finally being tranquilised and returned to his enclosure :-(
A terrifying moment
an angry 29-stone gorilla escaped from an enclosure at London Zoo after crowds were warned about taunting him –
Eighteen-year-old male silverback Kumbuka charged at the glass and managed to successfully break it before escaping the enclosure through an open door and started roaming the north London attraction for a horrifying 90 minutes.
What we know about Kumbuka
Kumbuka, an 18-year-old western lowland gorilla, arrived at ZSL London Zoo three years ago from a zoo in Devon.
A large, male silverback and the zoo's star gorilla attraction, he is the father of Gernot, a young male who was born in November last year to Effie.
The zoo's website says of Kumbuka: "Silverback Kumbuka is our male western lowland gorilla. He arrived at ZSL London Zoo from Paignton Zoo in Devon in early 2013, and despite never having had a female mate before, was quickly spotted flirting with females Mjukuu and Effie."
Kumbuka was born in Belfast Zoo in 1997, but after being rejected by his mother Delilah was transferred to Germany, where he was hand-reared in Stuttgart Zoo with other youngsters.
In 2006 he was transferred to Paignton Zoo, where he found a home alongside two other western lowlands, Kivu and Kiondo, who also came from Stuttgart.
