So many people have strayed from the principle of self government. I suspect it is because it places the responsibility of their legal and political circumstances squarly on their shoulders and glaringly evidences their own failures. It is really tough to consciously work through the brainwashing recieved in our youth. And when one begins to do that the loss of longtime friendships and the derision from family and community members seems to be a common event. But once you realize that you can preserve a right through a legal means and you start to see that the populace as a group really has no voice, the animated contest of freedom becomes much more attractive than the heavy chains of security.
