I have a FB "friend" who is advocating socialism. He has absolutely ZERO understanding of it. It is ironic how anarchists are accused of being deluded and believing in "utopia," but as Larkin points out, socialism is the true utopian nightmare.

rickcwood,
The mass delusion is resting on a foundation of cognitive dissonance. I remember Eckhart Tolle said "knowing the truth doesn't matter, only the truth matters". You can only speak to whatever consciousness is present in another person during the present moment. There is never dialogue (flow of meaning) between ego and true self because true self arises as ego dies. If you challenge ego you risk knee-jerk reaction of fear and hostility for your effort. In "zero type" situations like you've pointed out, perhaps the best you can do is perform the attentive listener role and wait, watch and listen for true self to arise.
Of course I don't advocate time investment indiscriminately. I have come to accept that there is no such thing as friendship, there are only the ties that bind. Often when someone calls me a friend they are attempting a tie of guilt and entitlement mentality, and I am not bound despite their later attempts to exercise such ties. If you experience uncomfortable emotion when being assertive with people perhaps remembering this bit of wisdom will help:
"Holding a person accountable is an act of respect, as surely as vengeance is an act of justice."
I don't know if the preceding quote is attributable to any specific individual. I've shared it for so long that it seems common sense. It must be common sense if most of the human population rejects it.
Those whom initiate aggression are staring into the same end times, and even the least conscious are finding the pain caustic to their ego mis-identification. These are very frightening times for them and you could be wise to expect some very hostile behavior manifest when their ego thrashes in finality. There is no separateness, however love does not imply pacifism. Use your consciousness to construct superior strategies to survive. Distance is one of the best. All credit due to Eckhart Tolle.
Enjoy your day.
