Real existing power in any society is never limited to the state, but it largely rests with those segments of the population with the greatest economic leverage. Your voice will never be heard by the state with the same awe as when corporate owners, investors, and the rich speak. This holds true whether the state system is authoritarian or democratic. Therefore, any political movement needs to redirect its focus from the state to private sector power; to both pressure and recruit, in order to amplify their demands, and to speak to the state with the voice they listen to.
