People don't care because deep inside they do not have self worth. Because they must become calous to deal with how little they think of themselves and this makes them cold to the cares of others.
If everything is seen as going wrong for them they cannot see others worth either.
The system we live in seeks to voluntarily imprison us at out usual social class trapping your self worth within the bounds of your birth.
