I've been using duolingo to learn some Spanish and I've found that acquiring new Spanish vocabulary is greatly assisted by similarities between a large number of Spanish and English words. No doubt it is fairly commonly understood that Spanish and English share some common heritage but it also seems that English directly borrows some Spanish words.
I am particularly struck by this when the actual meaning of words I've taken for granted, without question my entire life, is revealed. 'Real estate' being the most recent example.
In Spanish, 'real' means 'royal'. Now, it's possible this is to do with the degree of personal sovereignty one acquires by purchasing their own land but I suspect the true intention of referring to land property as 'real estate' is to describe it as a possession of a sovereign other than one's self. ie: In plain sight, one of the most meaningful possessions that can enhance a person's life is never actually their possession. When you consider the taxes and other restrictions that are levied against people for daring to attempt to lift themselves out of dependence by buying their own land, it's more and more obvious that ownership of land is never truely transferred.
In light of taxes that must be paid (or else) arising from individual land 'ownership', 'renting' is a more accurate way to describe what the individual is actually doing. If an individual ever were to truly own land, they would have achieved a kind of sovereign status - which is something the criminals that do business as 'government' will never allow.
One last thought on the trickery surrounding our true status in relation to those criminals; How many people are aware of the current practice of not even being allowed to hold legal title to land? This was the already watered down, 'enhanced renter' status that our grand parents were permitted. These days, all we are permitted is an even further watered down 'certificate of title'. The actual title either does not exist or is retained by the criminals doing business as 'government' / 'the state'.
We are taken to be serfs on a big tax farm. We are being farmed.
