Mahakam dolphin (Orcaella brevirostris) is a type of mammal animals are often called freshwater dolphins are almost extinct because based on data in 2007, the population of animals live only 50 tail and ranks the highest number of endangered Indonesian animals. Taxonomically, the mahakam dolphin is a subspecies of the Irrawaddy dolphin.

Unlike other water mammals that are dolphins and whales that live in the ocean, mahakam dolphins live in the rivers of the tropics. The population of endangered protected animals is only found in three locations in the world namely Mahakam River, Mekong River, and Irawady River.

This dolphin is found in many river estuaries in Kalimantan, but now it is a rare animal. In addition to the Mahakam River, the dolphins are also found hundreds of kilometers from the ocean, which is in the District of Kota Bangun, Kutai Kartanegara, East Kalimantan. Habitat of this species of fish and freshwater prawns can be found also in the waters of Lake Jempang (15,000 ha), Semayang Lake (13,000 ha), and Lake Melintang (11,000 ha).

The dolphin has a round head (like a bulb) with both small eyes (probably an adaptation to muddy water). The dolphin body is gray to wulung old, more pale at the bottom - there is no distinctive pattern. The small dorsal fin and round behind the mid back. The forehead is high and round; no beak. Broad pectoral fins rounded.

The dolphins move in small flocks. Although the views are not so sharp and the fact that dolphins live in muddy water, dolphins are 'experts' in detecting and avoiding obstacles. Perhaps they use ultrasound to perform the echo location as did by their relatives at sea. The population of these animals continues to shrink due to disrupted habitat, especially the increasingly busy traffic waters of the Mahakam River, as well as the high level of erosion and silting of the river due to the surrounding forest management. The conservation of Pesut Mahakam is also estimated to be threatened due to limited food in the form of shrimp and fish, having to compete with the fishermen along the Mahakam River.
