Animals Performing Magic? Nah! Just Magnetic Field.

Seeing a small piece of metal do jumps, flips and perhaps run non-stop on flat surfaced table all by itself, is quite amazing. What could be more interesting is just the fact that someone is controlling it by just holding a magnet below the table. For science loving teenagers, this is one of the best games and also a very popular prank too (atleast for the young ones). You probably must have heard about how birds make use of their magnetic field of Earth to help through navigation. However, what you may not really know is the fact that there are a lot of other creatures who posses a trace of magnetism in them also. Today we would be taking a more interesting look at them.

  • Pigeons

Pigeons happens to be the most popularly known creatures which make use of the magnetic field of Earth for the purpose of navigation are. While a lot of persons tend to find them potentially unhealthy and somewhat annoying, you really can’t deny the fact that they possess some real magnetic abilities.

In inner ear of the homing pigeons lies a good number of iron spheres in the hair cells; this is what facilitates detection and brings about navigation; by using the magnetic field of the Earth. Thus if Earth ever has a cause to lose its magnetic field (which is very impossible), then pigeons would have some really difficult moments in finding places they need to go.

  • The Sea Turtle

These very cute little creatures called sea turtles, you wouldn’t even have thought of it being such a magnetic freak. There exist just only a few landmarks in the sea, of which most are distant from each another. The female sea turtles uses the magnetic field of the Earth to travel for long distances. They would totally rely on the magnetic signatures which lies along the coast to lay eggs (isn't this just awesome) at their birthplace and make sure that the future generations of sea turtles find their home.

What really are trouts?!

A lot of people would wonder what this a trout is, well it's a fish, which you have almost certainly had on your dinner plate. Did you ever know that these type of fish had magnetic powers?! haha.lol. Definitely not. let's find out more about trouts.

Trout is the general name given to a number of species of fresh-water fish and are also closely related to char and salmon. About one (1) of every (10,000) cells in the lining of a trout’s nose has deposited in it very strong magnetic material which responds at any point it detects a change in the external magnetic field.

Can you just envisage what it be like if we humans had magnets in our noses!,cool

Fruit flies are very nasty little flies which basically hovers around un-refrigerated food that has been left out in the open space.

While most persons might find them irritating and nasty, fruit flies has a tremendous magnetic abilities. The Drosophila melanogasterwhich is a laboratory fly, has in itself a cryptochrome which has the ability to detect external magnetic fields. Result of a recent study, has shown that whenever a protein, found in the retina of a humans eye, is placed into a fruit fly, It also has the ability to to detect external magnetic fields.

There are quite a good number of metallic materials laying around the Earth’s crust, core and mantle: this is the reason why the earth has a magnetic field. Personally, it’s the right time for humans to start developing it's unique ability for detecting and creating magnetic fields. After all, who doesn’t envy Magneto’s powers?

Sort:

very interesting!! i've heard sharks and sting rays use magnetic fields as well to orient themselves

Really? I didn't know about those. Will check them out. Thanks for the input.

Very interesting, thanks for the info

Nice of you to stop by @atikajayboy

This would be sorted cool, simply cool.
