The best advice I've ever gotten with stuff like that is to take an older, already trained dog with you. The pups tend to follow the lead and learn much quicker than they do on their own. It makes your life easier.
If you have access to an older, trained dog you should give it a try.

I have a friend with a Golden Retriever that runs with him, maybe we should take them out together.
It takes away so many of the pains of trying to train a pup! :-)
