Según Ana Güimil, director and founder of the Catalan Association of Zootherapy, one of the most important characteristics of animals is that they "act as a bridge and help to boost the capacities of sociability".
She knows what she is talking about because her center works on three projects: one for patients with problems and mental delays; another for autistic, and a third one for women victims of gender violence. The animals he uses are dogs, rabbits and carolinian nymphs, small cockatoos.
Zootherapy, he explains, studies the patient and, depending on his pathology, prescribes the animal that best suits him. "Some will be good to have it at home and others to go to a place and interact with them some hours a week," he says. A dog, for example, can detect high blood sugar or epileptic seizures and even various cancers. In fact, "there are already trained dogs to alert their owners, with diabetes, of lowering sugar," he says.
