Tree kangaroos are located in the southeastern part of the world. They live in the tropical rain forests of New Guinea and in Queensland, Australia. This animal is related to the kangaroo and is a marsupial or pouch carrying animal. The tree kangaroo can be found in the mountainous regions of these places and they also occupy the lowlands. These creatures look more like large sized rodents than relatives the kangaroo.
Tree kangaroos are known for dwelling up in trees. In the dense rainforest these creatures make a life in the treetops. They jump around from tree to tree to find food and for recreation. These are unusual animals that can leap 30-feet from one tree to the next. They have an exceptional ability for balance and agility which allows them to navigate small and thin tree branches. These abilities also allow the animal to maneuver across tree limbs and other foliage.
Rarely will a tree kangaroo be found on the ground. They sometimes jump on the dirt below the trees, but they do not remain there for long. By nature, tree kangaroos have adapted to life in the trees. This animal’s body is suited for that type of environment. The ground simply interferes with their special skills as hoppers. When a tree kangaroo is on the ground, the beast can lunge at least 50-feet strait up into the air. They usually use their leaping power to get back into the trees. They can also jump down to the ground from this height.
Tree kangaroos are herbivores they only eat plants, flowers, sap, bark and other forms of vegetation. Female tree kangaroos give birth to baby’s known as joeys. These tiny kangaroo babies will instinctively crawl into their mother’s pouch after they are born. They will stay there for about 10 months before they will leave their mother’s side. Once they reached about 1.5 to 2 years old they will be on their own. The tree kangaroo is one mammal that has a unique way of living in the wild.
