Elephants are exceptionally smart and have the largest brain of any land animal. They are very emotional and expressive, capable of complex thought and deep feelings of joy, grief, anger, compassion, and love.
When elephants come across the remains of their loved ones they appear to recognize and mourn the departed, stopping to caress the bones with their trunks. Beautiful footage reveals the astonishing tenderness exhibited by these gentle giants.
Today they face challenges with trophy hunters and poachers who kill them for their tusks for ivory. Some people poach elephants because they believe its tusks to have healing powers and sell them for high prices, especially in the Asian markets.
Elephants have lived peaceful lives around Kilimanjaro for centuries but the pathways they have used are disappearing as land is being farmed and farmers safeguard their land against the traveling herds. Without access, it is becoming harder for the elephants to reach safe ground in the dry season.
Elephants have been around for centuries, living peacefully alongside mankind. This part of our history is tainting this relationship and will only get worse if nothing is done to protect them.
I'd like to shine the light on this issue and as it is #WorldElephantDay today please do whatever you can to contribute to the safety of these mammals. There are dozens of initiatives that support this cause and any donations made to them will help keep them safe.
